I pulled apart my 1.8 20” as the airport wasn’t working, and was going to try the airport card from my 2.0 17”, but the 17” didn’t have the same card. In fact it appears to use the same card from the iSight models but without the tricky case design. Fan and ducting layout is different as well.

The part you need is this one for your 17” or 20” ALS system: AirPort & Bluetooth Card A1127, Apple P/N 661-3614

yeah thanks but that's not what I'm saying. My 17" is different to the 17" that is on this page. Apparently apple revised the 17" adding an ambient light sensor and built in wifi/bluetooth. it is different to this one and the iSight model. Which means it no longer has the removable AirPort Extreme card shown on the guide.

Both the 17" & 20" models came in three different versions: Original, Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) & iSight.

Yes, I have the ALS version. It’s not mentioned on the ifixit page, only the pre ALS and iSight versions. It appears the ALS version (which I have) does NOT have the same AirPort Extreme card as per the guide. It has a smaller card directly attached to the logic board and a freely accessible PRAM battery. This model came standard with Airport and Bluetooth so I assume they didn’t bother with the plastic carriage and removable card design which makes more sense for an optional upgrade scenario.
In any case the airport card in my 20” 1.8ghz (pre ALS) iMac doesn’t appear to work and I can’t swap it out with the one from my 17” 2.0ghz (ALS) as it’s totally different.
Perhaps ifixit should update the guide title to reflect the specific iMac version it applies to?
