2012 iMac CPU upgrade. Is it worth it?!

Hi all,

Firstly, hope you are safe during these odd times!

I have been given this 2012 21.5” iMac (2.7 i5) from a family member and I’m looking at using as my music producing station when I’m not on the go.

In terms of other usages it will be using Citrix for work, the usual adobe suite an occasional 3d modeling. Overall it won’t be used heavily as I have my other new MacBook Pros to use.

I will be definitely be upgrading the RAM and putting an SSD in there, but was wondering if upgrading the CPU to the i7 3.1GHz (3770S) would be worth it?

My initial thoughts are that I would not see any significant gains with my usage, I’m only considering this since I’m doing the RAM upgrade getting all the way in.

Frank/y, I would focus on the RAM and the drive to gain the most performance! While you can get a bit more with a i7 vs the current i5 I don’t think the amount of added work is worth the risks.

Save your pennies, so when you start to produce more complex pieces you can get a system with a CPU which offers many more threads than eight.
