Update its drivers. This isn’t guarranteed to fix it. Had the same problem with my old epson and i had to reopen-reclose the lid every time i had to print something. I’ve come to the conclusion that epson’s low-end printers are not very reliable.
Also, have you been reloading it with not authentic ink? This can cause them to malfunction in the long run (corporate trick most manufacturers pull on us).

I have the same issue. When I attempt to install a new cartridge and open the ink storage area I get an error message; " scanner lid is open close the scanner lid". I am updating firmware on it to see if this helps. Will give you and update with the results.

I updated firmware and this did not fix the problem. It says "Cover Open - Close Scanner door". Scanner door is NOT open. Cannot open the lid to the ink compartment with the scanner door open.
