No Cellular Signal; hardware issue?

iPhone X (ATT) model had a cracked back glass that was pretty extensive and missing some pieces of the glass. This was the only damage to the phone; however, the phone worked just fine for the last six months.

Recently, the phone is unable to get any cellular signal. This appears to have happened overnight. WiFi and Bluetooth still work. The SIM card still reads. When I remove the SIM card and place it into another phone the cellular signal works. So this isn’t an ATT problem or a service outage in the area problem.

I’ve since replaced the back of the phone from another iPhone X and switched over all of the hardware, ensuring clean points of contact to the frame but without any improvement. This was to rule out the physical frame antenna as a culprit.

I’ve also replaced the cellular antenna at the bottom of the phone to rule out a faulty cellular antenna and also without any improvement.

I’ve performed a full reset of the phone twice now, as well as a network reset and no improvement.

I’m down to only two more options; either the interconnect ribbon is bad, or the logic board is somehow damaged. Replacing the interconnect ribbon is the next cost-effective choice or sending the phone out for repair on the logic board since this outside of my capabilities.

Was curious if anyone else has had a similar problem, or should I be looking for a new used iPhone X?

I have seen this issue a few times. If this didn’t happen a after a board repair the most likely reason would be from the drop. It might not have happened straight away, when the x series is subject to impact it can cause a crack in the solder balls that connect the top and bottom layer. Over time these become oxidised.

I have had some success by re-flowing the top and bottom layer with a preheater but if that doesn’t fix the problem I have to separate the layers to continue diagnostics. This can be costly.

It sounds costly. This does make sense as a possible etiology since the phone has been dropped. Do you use a simple heat gun for this?

I use a preheater designed to separate the X series. I wouldn't recommend a heat gun unless you where experienced. If you put to much heat on the board it will be a deal breaker. If you are going to attempt this make sure to use good flux and remove all the black insulation around the FPC connectors.

Wanted to give a sit-rep to this problem. I replaced the motherboard with another unlocked one and this fixed my cellular issues which leaves me to believe the original motherboard was damaged either at the FPC connector OR the solder balls.

Since replacing the motherboard; everything aside from the obvious Face ID not working is good with exception to Apple Wallet soooo... on to the next form question.

Hi Chris,

How would one go about diagnosing this?

I have bad celular reception with or without antenna.

It's always ony 2 bars. Can I test your solution without opening up the logicboard?

@Maarten De Bal There isn’t any way to diagnose and I have recently discovered that re-flowing the layers is only temporary and they need to be separated and new quality solder applied.
