Tip of audio cable stuck in audio jack.

The tip of my audio cable is stuck in the audio jack. Ultimately I want to remove it so I can hear some sound.

1) Can I somehow switch on the internal speakers without removing the tip?

2) Has anyone a smart way of removing the tip. I am imagining - inserting a spreading tool - maybe a guided drill - superglue?

I have a 2008 24inch intel machine.

The good news is that the problem is now fixed.

We tried two different epoxy glues, and superglue with combinations of metal rods, the old plug, and earbud sticks, all to no avail.

Finally we used a guided 1.5mm drill bit. We made the guide using a metal pen refill and an inner sleeve made of soft aluminum - we got this from the outside of a tealight candle. The sleeve not only guided the drill bit but it was cut to length so we could only drill 2-3mm deep. The tip simply jammed onto the drill bit and came out with it.

Note we covered all the other sockets while we drilled and sucked out all metal shavings with a vacuum cleaner.

I have a similar problem with my computer, tried superglue several times to no avail. I don't have a guided drill, but that's a good thing to keep in mind. Please put your comment as an answer and accept it, so that the question will show up as accepted... thanks!

There is a tool we made that was on Kickstarter called the GripStick. It is made specifically for removing a broken headphone plug from any standard audio jack. It's available now.

We have a few and they work!

I bought one!!

さんによる

Yep, and the tool is garbage too. Tried it on 3 different iPads with headphones broken off in it and the tool winded up breaking. Followed the exact video on the store page.

さんによる

If you twist it you can snap it! We managed to break one the first time we used it. Once we pressed and pulled it worked just fine. Of the three we still have we use them almost every day.

さんによる

I purchased two back in 2015. I use them frequently but only have success about 25% of the time. Still looking for something better.

Thanks for the help... do you know if it's possible to remove the logic board on this generation iMac?

さんによる

Yes the logic board can be remove from this model of iMac. The gist of your instructions to do so are here: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309 and 2374 Teardown

さんによる

Not sure if removing the logic board helps though. The socket has a shield surrounding it.

The best (an especially glueless) way to do it is actually quite simple and doesn't require any fancy tools. You just get a straw, just a normal plastic drinking straw, and cut in it so it can fit your jack. Then you just push it in the jack so it slides around the broken piece of the plug. Then you turn your device so that the jack is facing the floor, and the plug should slip out. If it doesn't, remove the staw slowly with the jack facing the floor and then take a pair of tweezers and grab the part that has already slipped out and pull it out carefully. It's cheap and fast and worked for me... I unfortunately lost my gold-plating on the jack but I think it's nothing glue can't fix.

The straw got stuck in the jack and now I can't listen to anything with headphones...

さんによる

That's happened to me so I might give this a try the head phones still work but they are a bit louse and make my iPad keeps pausing videos because Siri keeps coming on

さんによる

the straw doesn’t fit, it just folds as soon as i put it in. any other things i could use ?

さんによる

A straw with a different diameter @gabbycolquhoun

My ear bud jack was stuck in the female jack of my iMac. I read all kinds of solutions with glue a straw or drilling. All of which imposed a risk of further damage.

Here is what I did and the tools I used.

RS-232 pin straightener (for us old analog guys)

iFixit Probe and Pick Set

iFixit Flat Needle Nose Pliers

I covered the display and unibody with a heavy towel for protection and Unplugged power

Used pin straightened tool to free the edges of the headphone male jack from the female internal jack

Used the smallest probe to pull the stuck piece forward

Used the needle nose pliers to grab the jack and remove it

Success without any damage to my oh so addicting iMac 27"

As always I used this site to get ideas. Thanks iFixit you are amazing!

Although I couldn't get mine out, i do have a way to get your speakers working. I don't know anything about how to do this technique in windows 7 but here it is for windows 8. And these instruction are if you have dell, but i am sure that you will have other sound options over there.

1. Open up control panel by going to your start screen and searching for 'control panel'

2. Once its open, click hardware and sound.

3. Click Dell audio

4. Once it opens, click advanced and then jack information.

5. Then click on the jacks( there will be an icon)

6. Another window will open.

7. Click on line( it will be the first option).

8. Your speaker should be working again!!

If u have the peice that broke of from the stuck peice u can carefully glue on a extention peice wooded\orange stick or toothpick and the other exposed peice that broke off... Put tiny bit of crazy glue on it and try and be patient as u carefully enter it back in the earjack hole. Wait for it to dry. But don't let go of it. Keeping it centered. Than if u gave it at least 3 mins slowly put it straight out. And call yourself a hero. Lol. U need to have a steady hand and patience with plenty of light. It works.

Hey guys, my name is Lalith. A silicon bead got stuck and I didn't see it. I pushed my headphone in too much and it got struck really hard. So, this is what I did. I took a key chain connector which was really thin interms of width and straightened it out. I just pushed it real hard into the audio port and the silicon thing just broke, came out. I used vaccum to remove some pieces. So everything came out but there was this metal thingy inside which I thought it was the silicon ball and I was just pushing on it too hard. I didn't know that this metal thing is actually a part of the port itself. So be careful not to push on that metal thing too hard.

Thanks guys.

Peace out.

Hii! I had this same problem with my iMac 27in today. I use the end of a Qtip Cotton swab. Cut it. Leaving 0.5in including the cotton. The objective is to use the end tip of the hole of the cotton, not the middle. Since it's tighter and has more strength to pull it out. Push it in further then pull it out. It works wonders :)

I used a thin screw not wider than the computer audio port head phone jack opening.

Screw into stuck piece of head jack center alignment where it grips into the plastic surrounding
the center audio wire.
Use needle nose pliers to pull screw out. Easy breeze.

Thanks for the tip. I had the same problem and used the drilling solution with a 1.5mm bit.

I snipped the end of a standard biro plastic sheath (the inner bit) and shaved it down to a snug fit in the headphone socket.

After a fair few attempts finally go the drill far enough into the offending article to bite and out it came.

This does require some precision so take care.

This is a solution that involves glue but it worked perfectly for me. Get some quick dry super glue and apply some to the broken end of the headphone plug. Make sure that there is none on the sides because we sons want it to get stuck in there forever! Insert the pluck into the jack, making sure that it's perfectly connected to the broken end that's lodged. Leave that in for 5-10 mins and after that, grab the plug and tug it out. Don't pull too hard or twist. NOTE:DONT USE GORRILLA GLUE. Hopefully that helped!

What worked perfectly for me was something that came to mind when I realized I had no superglue, no straw, no drill bit, and so on.

What I used was a very thin NAIL that is used in conjunction with a hammer. It’s about 1 inch in length and is very thin.

I sat the laptop on its side with the aux plug facing up, centered the nail, GENTLY tapped it with the hammer, and pulled it right out with ease, and without damage.

I believe this is the most effective way to remove the broken aux tip. Literally took me less than a minute once the idea came to mind.

The tip of the nail is thin and sharp, therefore penetrating the broken aux tip with ease and not a lot of force. Tapping it GENTLY with the hammer enough to get the tip of the nail inserted to the broken aux tip is all that’s needed. When the nail sits up on its own, pull it up gently and bam. Done.
