Screen stopped working but phone still turns on and touch still works

My phone dropped, top half only, into some water for maybe 1 second on the 23rd. I quickly cut it off and dried it off and kept it up in the same direction so that any potential water would not continue further into the phone. Next day I cut it on and everything seemed fine except the camera appeared to still have some moisture stuck behind the lens and the touch was spazzing out. I decided to take off the camera lense and back of phone to try and make sure nothing at least was on that half of the phone and to dry the lens out with a microfiber cloth. I used a hair dryer, because i dont have a heat gun, to heat the adhesive and everything went fine. no extra water behind the glass back. But when i put them back on and went to cut the phone back on the screen suddenly stopped working but it still vibrates and reacts to touch. What should i do from here?

Hi @linalieluna

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

First do not turn on your phone and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you have to use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA it contains. The more the better.

Here is a link that describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

Also be sure to remove the LCD screen flex cable from its connector on the systemboard and clean the cable end and the connector with IPA in case water got in there as well.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Motorola Moto Z3

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Hi @jayeff , on my phone the adhesive stopped holding the screen sealed. What would you recommend for resolving this adhesive issue?

Hi @Christian Daguin,

I'm no expert but most have no problems with Tesa 61395 tape.

I don't know your phone (if it is a Moto Z3) but would think that the 1mm size should be OK.

Just ensure that the surfaces are totally clean before using. Clean with Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ and allow to dry before applying the tape
