Dropped my PC, now it’s stuck on automatic repair.

I was watching YouTube on my HP Pavilion 15-aw065sa and it slid off my lap off the side of my bed and onto the floor (about a foot and a half drop, landing on its left side if you were looking toward the screen). Now when I try to start up I am greeted with automatic repair which doesn’t work. I tried factory resetting and lots of auto repair loop fixes on YouTube in case it was a software issue and just a coincidence, but none worked. I have been meaning to take it to a PC repair shop (which is a pain as I live and work in a rural area and any close pc repair shops aren’t open on weekends) but wanted to check first if anyone had any ideas. I assume - and hope -it’s nothing serious since it will still load automatic repair, but haven’t a clue when it comes to this sort of thing. Any help is very appreciated, this PC has all my work on it!

You should run a test on your Hard Drive to see if it was damaged during the drop. Start by shutting down the PC and then follow these steps:

Press the power button to turn on the computer and hold down the ESC button
When the menu comes up, select the option for “System Diagnostics”
Run the HDD or Hard Drive “Quick Test” and look for a “FAIL” or “PASS”

If it has failed, the HDD will need to be replaced. Taking it to a computer shop will be the best chance of recovering any data off of the faulty drive.

Thanks for your help. I ran a quick test on my hard drive and the hard drive smart check passed but the hard drive short dst check failed. I take it in simple terms this means I need a new hard drive like you said? Is this a definite or could there be problems with several components?

In my experience this is typical HDD failure and it will need to be replaced. If you really like the computer and want to upgrade the speed a bit try opting for a SSD (Solid State Drive) instead. They have no moving parts which makes them faster and less likely to fail in the future. The only downside is they cost more per GB than the typical HDD.

Will all files and data be lost and removed ?

@R Kamal ...yes. if your hard drive failed any testing, your data is already gone. you could have it recovered possibly by placing the platters in a donor hardrive. this is expensive to do. if you dropped your drive and thats what has caused the failure, recovery will not help you and its too late.
