My MacBook Pro screen flickers and glitches. (Images)

It’s been doing this for a week. It always show resolution issues, pixel tear and horizontal line glitches during startup. Sometimes it stops after a few minutes, and I can squeeze some work time in. Other times it doesn’t stop and I need to leave it shut down.

Can someone give me a possible diagnosis or assistance before I have to go give 600$ for repairing something 1/10 that price. IFIXIT suggests these might be unrepairable ourselves.

It’s horrible. Help!

Edit 1: Never dropped. Minor dings and dents due to usage exist. Movement of display or body does not affect the appearing or disappearing of the glitches whatsoever.

Edit 2: Pairs perfectly with an external display via HDMI, when not glitching. (Image)

For me the lines and sound comes after 10-15 seconds of powering on the laptop. Happens when I was watching Netflix. Could be some graphic error?

Does the screen start glitching like that immediately when you turn it on or only after a certain point on the loading bar?

This looks to me like physical damage to the display, was it dropped or anything? You will most likely just need to replace that. You can do it yourself fairly easily but the part itself is typically well over $500, so it does end up being an expensive repair no matter where you go. Another thing that occurs to me is it could be the LCD cable that is damaged somehow. You could try replacing that instead (Part: MacBook Pro Retina (2012-2015) Display LVDS Cable): MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013 LCD Cable Replacement — It’s a bit of a long-shot but it’s definitely a far cheaper repair so I would try it.

Starts glitching immediately on boot. But once it calms down (most times after a few minutes), it works FLAWLESSLY for hours. Then a sleep or a shut down and it starts going mad again. If I'm unlucky, it won't stop glitching till I shut it down come back to it after a few hours.

Never dropped it, but it does have bumps on the edges due to the backpack hitting edges of walls or doors over the years.

Thank you for replying so quickly!

Is the glitching affected when you put pressure on the display or when you open and close the display? If so it's definitely going to be physical damage.

If you're lucky it could be the LCD cable, I'll update my answer with info on that.

さんによる

@jonaharagon The glitching seems to have no relation to the movement of or pressure on the display or the device.

さんによる

@sushmeit I would definitely give the cable a try first if the screen works sometimes, especially since there's no visible cracks on the LCD and moving it doesn't affect anything. You might get lucky. No liquid damage that you know of, or any corrosion around the LCD connector?

It being a GPU problem on the other hand is highly, highly unlikely, but we can rule that out for sure quick. Could you attach an external monitor/TV and see if it's glitching at all? If it doesn't glitch on another monitor then the problem is either going to be the display, the display cable, or the display connector on the logic board.

@jonaharagon No liquid damage that I can remember. Works fine with an external display. I've included an image above.

My display started doing the same, but when i connect and external monitor via HDMI or Thunderbolt both screens work perfectly , the other fun thing is that if i run the machine on windows or linux it works perfectly , so i think is not the screen nor the cable, one technician told me it was something with the hertz , the frequency the screen is working with macOS , change the refresh ratio but, change it to the same that wndows or linux uses with this screen , the thing is that i have tried many ways to do it with not success and im stock with the problem still.

I hope someone knows how to fix it , thank you

Exactly the same issue I have. Have you solved it? It’s a very strange issue. Works fine and when connected to a display.. if there is movement on the displayed content it is fine. But if the image becomes static, the issue returns

さんによる

@Charles - You have a MUX logic issue within the main logic board.

Hello guys

I have the same issue. MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) Mojave 10.14.6.

This started after I opened it to change the battery to a new one, last week.

I'm starting to think that I screwed up. Pressing the screen works, somethimes.

Other times, it's on for hours without any problems. Send it to Apple repair is the only way?

same thing here! started after battery change.. did you fix it?

Me too after battery swap. Anyone work this out?

For earlier 2012~2013 mbp retina there were issues with gpu power chip delaminating from the board due to heat from the gpu and poor solder. There was a recall programme for a year or two, but the fix was to put a little rubber hat on the chip to press it onto the board. A resolder fixes it. Not sure if later models fixed this design fault.

My issue was the screen/laptop not turning on at all, but it did occasionally have visual glitches before it stopped working entirely. I got my local repair guy to watch a Louis Rossmann video to flux and resolder the gpu power chip and my 15” mid 2012 mbp retina works fine again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqgHOa7l...

I have similar problem. It looks like whenever the laptop goes to sleep or turned off it will go crazy for a few minutes, then goes back working normally until next sleep or shutdown. Then I realized that it was not because the machine goes to sleep or turned off, it was because the display being turned off. Conversely, if the display is never turned off, that problem will never happen. So what I did was simply have the energy setting to never turn off display and just set the brightness to zero when I do not use it. This seems does not the lifespan of the display.

Yes! Quite a few times! Test your external display does it also show the same effect?

I have the same problem, couldn't solve it yet. An external monitor works. The problem goes away after a few minutes as the computer warms up. If you turn it off, it cools down again and the problem starts all over again. There is probably a cold solder joint.
