Location of Apple SSD drive on iMac 2011 27" discovered
The custom configured iMac with an SSD drive hides the drive in a different place than it traditionally would be placed.
To find the Apple SSD drive check underneath the CD/DVD drive.

I wish I had this answer the other day before I followed various notes online and finally began digging below the Logic Board. I eventually found it the other day.
Finally right there under the Optical drive as you’ve wonderfully photographed it. Thank you for posting the photo for others, and potentially myself if I have a long day!
@danj have one of these on the bench that I bought. Am working on the GPU but ordered the cable for a 2.5" SSD. iMac Intel 27" (Mid 2011) Dual Hard Drive Kit / Upgrade Parts Only
My thinking was to just keep the old hard drive, thus I don't have to buy an OWC thermal sensor for $50 (maybe do a fusion drive setup).

Can I retain the optical AND add an SSD?
@mayer - Yes! There is a third SATA port on the logic board. The guide will aim you to the spare port Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Dual Drive Kit (HDD or SSD)
@danj Thanks, just got the cable in today. Do you know about this GPU replacement. I could not get the seller to respond to my email about it already being flashed. Seems like a much better alternative than putting an expensive Apple one in again that is likely to fail.
