Recently replaced battery and now the MacBook is overheating

I recently replaced the battery in my early 2013 15” Macbook Pro Retina Display with a battery from iFixIt, following their instruction manual. Now my Macbook is getting much warmer than it ever did prior to the battery replacement. The fans seem to be running at proper speeds. What could be causing my macbook to heat up?

Let's see if we can get a better look at what's happening. Install this gem of an app CoconutBattery this will allow you to get a better view of the battery. In addition lets look at the thermal sensors and fans, install this great app TP Pro

Take snapshots of both apps main windows (you'll first need to adjust the TG Pro window so all of the sensors are visible with the fans). Post them here for us to see iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法

I would first suggest ensuring both fans are plugged in and rotating.

It could be a faulty battery or this may be normal behavior after an aftermarket battery is installed. Even though the fans are running in a normal speed/manner, I would still make sure the fans and cooling fins of the heat sink are clean and clear of obstruction and ensure the battery is not swollen. If the battery is getting hotter than normal to the point where it feels like or you know it is over heating, the computer should detect this and speed up the fans to compensate for the excess heat.

The parts from iFixit are generally excellent in quality and typically among the best parts available. Unfortunately, Apple does not provide avenues to obtain genuine or original parts for their devices. Sadly they take action to prevent third party repair on many levels and would prefer you buy a new device when you have an issue.

Did you notice a drastic difference in the weight of the original battery vs the new one? Any impact on performance since the battery replacement, good or bad? Lastly, does the battery perform as expected? As long as it isn’t getting overly hot and all is performing as expected I personally would dismiss the heat as normal behavior of an aftermarket battery. You can contact iFixit to see if they offer a warranty or return program to ensure you did not receive a faulty battery.

I’m sorry I don’t have a more direct answer to your question.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Hi,

I can agree with this as i just swapped my battery with a MacBook Pro 15 mid-2014. Everything was fine before I swapped the battery and now after the replacement the processor heats up to 100 C when running a simple application. Word, Excel or Safari/chrome with 10 tabs. I have cleaned out the old thermal paste form the heat sink, processor and GPU. I have downgraded from Big Sur to Mojave and Catalina, to no avail.

I've seen a fair amount thermal issues, rarely is the issue the battery based on what you described. Let's get something to figure out what's really the cause.

See screenshots above.

@rf202 - Your battery temps are normal! Batt 24℃, Batt Management & Batt Proximity both 30℃

So your issue is a process running hard. You'll need to look at what is running. I'm suspecting it maybe the M.2 SSD you installed. Have a feeling that's what is messing you up.

さんによる

I can confirm that was the problem. After installing the default SSD, it would spike to 99C under load, but not as often. Any recommendations as to what 2TB SSD I could use that won't cause this issue? Thank you for your help!!

@rf202 - Other than another Apple SSD your only other option is a ground up designed SSD that matches Apples specs from OWC Aura Pro 6G

The problem you face is the limitations of this series interface. Review this great guide for more info The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs
