I bought a used Samsung model HTF - 435 RK/ZX receiver and it did not have any speakers or wires attached to the unit so I do not know the correct way to connect the speakers (positive and negative) coming out of the receiver, it is not labeled. I am trying to hook it up but I want to make sure what side is positive and which side is negative. Please advise

Do you mean model HTF453? I could not find any model HTF435 online. If it is HTF453, here is a link to the manual.
With speakers, the red clip is usually the positive, and black is the negative. In reality, you can connect it any way as long as you connect all of them that way. This is of course talking about speakers that are not self-powered and driven by the receiver amp.
Note that this receiver is originally sold in a 5.1 surround sound set, so it is probably built to drive specific speakers. What you connect to it may or may not work, depending on wattage.

Unless you're dealing with something weird like a DVD player combo or a cheap and nasty one, it usually has no impact and standard jacks (but be warned cheap bundles may use low-quality connectors on the receiver). Most normal receiver bundles use 6 or 8 ohm speakers, depending on how low end it is. 6 ohms is typically reserved for good ones and 8 ohms for cheaper ones.
If you can't afford much and don't need more then 2 speakers, Sony's bookshelf units come with excellent bundled speakers, but you should source out the 90's speakers (which may have foam rot, so check before buying) and make sure it uses 6 or 8 ohms or it came with a nonstandard bookshelf stereo.
Funny you mentioned it @nick, cause the HTF453 IS a DVD player combo!
It looks like it has nonstandard jacks just from the manual.
