White screen of death / capacitor next to gpu blown out?

My friend gave me an ipod touch with water damage that wouldnt turn on. i put it on the charger and after 2 days it turned on with a white screen. i decided to go in and using a pry tool scrape away at the corrosion all across the board, and it powered on and worked great. now it has been 2 months and suddenly i heard a sizzling noise and the back of the ipod became very hot. i then opened it and desoldered the battery and waited for it to cool. i took a closer look and i see 1 blown capacitor, i have a replacement capacitor from another ipod touch 2g logic board. i need to know how to transfer it without damaging it? and so it seems a capacitor overheating problem is perfectly linked with the white screen of death.

Depending on te size of the capacitor (Could you post a picture?), it may be impossible, unless you have amazing soldering skills. I've successfuly done component-level repair on game consoles and computer hardware, but never on moble devices. The smallest diodes I've ever been able to successfully replace were around 1mm in size, and I've been doing this stuff for years. You would also need a soldering iron with a very fine tip.

sure I will when i get home later today. i have done component level repair on consoles and computer motherboards, but nothing this small. it doesnt seem impossible, but it seems hard. im not sure what holds it onto the board, adhesive or solder. but i would really like to try because thats the only thing keeping me from a fully working ipod touch 16gb.

You really can't use a Iron on the SMD's. (You can but It needs to have thermal controls). Also capacitors don't blow without a reason. There is a short somewhere else. Probably corrosion bridging a trace. To remove You just need to remove the soldier with wire brade. Re tin the cap you remove and put in place. Heat one side pushing the part down heat the other side. Should be pretty easy.

very true, so far ive gone with a plastic spludging tool between all the pieces on the board to reduce the chance of an shorts caused by corrosion. also, when taking the piece off the board i currently have can the heat damage the capacitor ?

i'd try this too Electronics Water Damage. it will work better than your spudger for removing corrosion and debris.
