Dropped 3GS, Had screen repaired, still have problems with signal

I recently (sept) dropped my iPhone 3GS and broke my screen. Before this I had been having alot of trouble with my signal going from 3G to edge to none to some service to no service.

This could be even if the phone sat still on a table or counter. So when I sent it to the iPhone doctor I asked him to look at my antenna, he said their was nothing wrong.

I looked at this No Service iPhone 3G issue

And a few others, some solutions I got were tighten this screw making sure it's snug to the iPhone frame.

Replace the iPhone dock, but I also read that the iPhone docks online have bad antenna assemblies.

My wifi antenna wasnt effected, but I can sit my phone next to another 3G and watch the signal show on mine and they will have a steady 5 3G

So do I replace the dock? Are they different based on batch of iPhone 3GS ? Can I use small tools or should I order these plastic ones ?

Thank u all

so i replaced this with a part bought on amazon, and now instead of poor signal I'm getting 0 signal. The charging and the music and mic are working fine, any thoughts ? The speaker is actually way better then the one that came with the original doc.

and your "springs" make contact with the bezel? screws on tight enough?

による

see we were just talking about that down there no one had any idea what i was talking about, so what are you talking about now if you didn't know what i was talking about down there?

による

i thought in your previous comments you were talking about screws and the bezel which was a iphone 4 solution... so.. iphone 3gs has cable/connector 7 which has 2 gold wings/prongs/springs that make contact with the metal frame of the phone. that's what i'm talking about.it is possible to get a dodgy part...

try resetting network/carrier settings? remove sim, clean it. airplane on and off. hard reset...try all the usual

one new problem and an old problem re-inventing itself. So like i had mentioned i had a large crack in my iphone screen and had sent it off to be repair. When i got it back my home button isn't as responsive as it should be. I have to hit it a couple times for it to act, and double tap ? forget about it your there all day trying to get the ipod controls to show themselves.

the other problem as mentioned below is i replaced the docking connection and still it has problems with the cellular signal. I started searching around the net and i found a diagram that actually shows another part of the phone is labeled as antenna is this true? They point to a point at the top of the phone that owuld be under the sim card slot on the logic board

Hi daniel, it sounds like the antenna on the dock is the problem, it may be that when you dropped the phone some damage was done or a connection came loose. As to what to do next? I'd open the phone and just check the cable no 7 is on and not damaged (that's your antenna) there is also a small gold spring within the dock itself and another on the motherboard. check these for damage and that the 2 prongs are in contact with the metal bezel of the phone (the metal frame forms part of the antenna) if this doesn't solve the problem then I'd replace the dock or just the flex. the parts are pretty good really.. check out the feedback from others buying at the site of your choice ( probably why I recommend ebay...good feedback, free post etc)

tools... you'll need a pretty small phillips head screw driver, 000 or 00. you can buy them anywhere..

suction cup (off anything...nothing special about it) or use packing tape across the screen and folded at the bottom so you have something to pull up with to remove the front panel.

you don't need the spudger really.

ps there are no screws that need to be tightened i think you must have read a post on a 4g.

Shrug it was defently here and talked about the bezel ring and a do not remove sticker, waiting on parts / tools

による

i think i know what you mean... the screw over the battery near the do not remove sticker is for battery contact, but there is a gold metal "tab" which sticks out from the board right near there to make contact with the bezel. the iphone 4 has problems with a screw which needs to be tightened for wifi or something. PS..join the waiting game for parts and tools..it's never ending. good luck

this issue still remains, i went online and got a new docking portion of the iphone 3gs. After installing it had two copper links to touch the outter ring of the iphone that is the antena. I ensured to the best of my ability that they were both touching, but still the phone has problem changing from Edge to 3g icon and also will have trouble having good signal.

To compare this i place it next to another person with a working Iphone 3gs and their signal will be fine but mine could be week or searching, does anyone have another solution ?

I'm in your boat Daniel! Everything you said exactly is happened to me. I replaced the dock connector and still nothing... In one post I heard it could be the GSM module but I don't know what the ^&^^ that is or where it's located...
