My panasonic dmr-e47v locks up after I turn it on and turn the remote to input 4 which usuually makes the dvd function. It won’t do that any more. What should I do?

Presumably "input 4" is one of the inputs on your TV, is this correct?
If not what do you mean by this.
How is the DVD player connected to the TV, via a HDMI connection or an AV connection etc?
If you turn on the DVD player does it turn on correctly or not if you do not select the "DVD player" input on the TV?
If connected via HDMI to the TV have you tried a different HDMI port on the TV or tried using an AV connection between the player and the TV?
