MBP shutting down while high battery and only certain applications

Hey there!

My system has been shutting down consistently at around 70%-80%.

To add to that, once I plug in the MagSafe in for a little bit, and it lights up, I can unplug it and the system will continue working until the battery is gone.

I find that certain applications like games and such turn it off, but document applications don’t.

I’ve followed alongside lots of examples:

  • Installed CoconutBattery, made sure the design capacity is well above 70%
  • Resetted SMC, let the computer sit from 100% to 0% multiple times already, and it doesn’t shut down in this case when I run some scripts to drain the battery
  • Ran Apple Hardware Diagnostics with the extended test and no errors came back

I was wondering if anybody has any solutions to this?

Can you post a snapshot of CoconutBattery both with the MagSafe plugged in and a second just on battery. iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法

Unfortunately those look as first signs of a graphic card failure. If you use a benchmarking App such as Valley (https://benchmark.unigine.com/valley) and Mac shuts down at every lauch you have your confirmation of it. That’s probably happening right now when you use an App calling for discrete card use.

The GPU does look like it gets hot a bit like 92-95 degrees when running on Basic for valley but it looks like it's able to run through the whole thing, but even letting it cooldown for an hour it would still not turn back on, but once I connect the magsafe even just for a bit it turns back on right away and continues to work

Faulty GPUs usually don't last 15" with a benchmarking app running. It can happen batteries have such stupid behaviors sometimes, I have one around I use for testing doing that quite often, seems to need some encouragement from charger every now and then. You may try disconnecting the battery if you can use it plugged for some time and see what happens..if shut downs end I'd vote for battery replacement despite the few charging cycles.

By the way..temperature is a bit on the high side, but nothing concerning thinking you have a quadcore i7 and GPU under load. Maybe thermal paste refresh would be in order if it's been never been done..
