Does this model have a PRAM/NVRAM battery?

After searching various places including iFixit, I cannot find any information about replacing the PRAM/NVRAM battery in the mid-2011 Intel iMac 27” (iMac 12,2 … EMC 2429).

Does this model even have a replaceable PRAM/NVRAM battery?

Why are you worried about this PRAM battery? Since Apple moved away from the 3.6 1/2 AA PRAM batteries, I have yet to see one of the new ones fail.

If the system is not plugged in then the battery will run down. But I agree its rare for this to be an issue for most people as they will have their system plugged in so the vampire draw (AC) will keep things stable.

The system is 7 years old and my practice has been to shut it down when not in active use and turn off the surge protector it’s plugged into. Hence the battery is probably nearing end of life. I was not overly concerned about this until today when the system started some weird behavior. I have done various diagnostics and have begun to suspect the battery may need to be replaced. This may not be the entire solution but it certainly won’t hurt if I have to open the iMac anyway.

mreber if your date and time are not holding and you loss your printer settings when not connected to the internet, then suspect the battery. The two moderators who have answered you are not kids and probably have close to 60 years of experience between just the two of us. Tell us what the weird behavior is and let the real professionals advise you instead of guessing at causes.

Yes, there is a PRAM/NVRAM battery on the Logic Board. You can see where it is below, I have circled it circled blue.

Thanks! Do you happen to know what battery it is … CR2032 … BR2032 or something else?

さんによる

I believe that it is a CR2032, but I have never opened up this model iMac to be 100% sure. Maybe @danj or @mayer can reinforce that guess or suggest otherwise here.

And one more question (sorry I didn't think of it earlier). To replace the battery, I know you have to remove the display panel. But is it accessible then, or is it on the underside of the logic board, necessitating removal of the logic board to get to the battery?

さんによる

I believe that it is on the underside of the Logic Board. Here's a guide on how to remove the Logic Board so you can get to the PRAM/NVRAM battery. It's a real pain :(

Interesting. Thank you. In the video the battery IS on the underside of the board. BUT ... in the teardown video for this model here in iFixit (see iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Teardown ) the battery is clearly visible once you remove the display (around 8:30 in the video). It's gonna be an adventure.
