Looking for a part

My iPhone 5 has been used as a music device for a while and was working fine, but the battery has swelled and split the case. I can find the new battery no problem and I’ve replaced them before, but the pressure from the swelled battery has damaged the pair of tiny rails that attach to the screen and affix the screen assembly to the back of the case. I can’t seem to find these rails anywhere. They are affixed to the screen assembly by small screws. Where can I get them?

Those rails are embedded in the screen, you can’t replace them without replacing the screen (or refurbishing the screen). If you don’t want to invest any more money in this device, I would just re-assemble it as-is. It may float a bit in the mid-section but it should be usable.

Otherwise, you’ll need to replace the screen.

Perhaps my photo was not obvious. The rails I'm talking about are not embedded, they're held onto the shield via screws, which are visible in the photo. I've unscrewed one and taken another photo, which is included in this thread.

Take a look at the 360 view image for this part (iPhone 5 LCD and Digitizer), you will see clearly that the rails are embedded in the LCD assembly. The shield plate (iPhone 5 LCD Shield Plate) screws into the rails from the screen.

You will need to replace the screen and transfer over the shield plate.

I don't need to look at a video, I'm holding the phone in my hand and I've unscrewed the NOT EMBEDDED rails from the screen assembly and photographed them. I'm fine if there's no way to get them from iFixit, but these rails are not embedded in anything.

What a cranky pants. The plastic frame of the screen has "rails' EMBEDDED in it, in the same way that an oreo cookie has a white center embedded between two chocolate wafers. Yes you can twist the cookie and BREAK IT so that you separate the wafer from the white center. You can also rip up an iPhone 5 screen assembly so that the digitizer/LCD/backlight "the screen" is separated from the plastic screen frame (and the frame 'rails' ) that it is glued to. You can then snap the plastic frame as you've done here so that the frame is broken, and you can bend the metal rails that are part of the frame.

When normal people do this and the screen is fine and works---as in your case---it is natural to want to fix the frame so that you can save $20 and not have to buy a new screen over a broken frame. I would advise you to do what everyone else in this same situation does and simply straighten the bent rails and pop the screen back into the housing ignoring the fact that you have a crack in the plastic frame. With effort, it will go back in okay and once put back in the phone housing, the screen will fit fine just like putting together two puzzle pieces.

You can buy a new screen frame---but you will have to source that as "comes with free lcd" by buying an aftermarket iPhone 5 screen for $20 bucks and then oreoing off the screen from the frame and swapping over your beloved native LCD. Have at it. That's the answer.

And one last step---stop being an internet jerk. Nobody like a douchebag OP when folks are taking time out of their day to try and help you fix something you broke.

The “rails” that you are talking about are part of a new screen. Buy a new screen and you will have new rails.

The backplate on the LCD you need to transfer over and yours will be bent—iron it out and see if you can make it work, if not, then just leave it off—this is an iPhone 5.

So your answer to my question is "you can't get these rails, which are screwed to the shield, as a separate part."

さんによる

sure, buy a new screen for $20 and voila--new 'rails'

Or, you can search this very forum for the last guy who was asking this same question.

How do I replace screen bezel frame iPhone 5?

さんによる

I did search the forum. That link you posted has nothing to do with the rails about which I'm speaking.

さんによる

@jmwells The link that I posted is exactly the same thing that you are asking about. You are both making up terms to try and describe the same part. What you call "rails" he is calling "screen bezel frame" ---you both mean the same thing--the frame that the LCD/digitizer/backlight (aka the screen) is glued to.
