The MacBook was shut down and would not turn back on.
The only way to get it to turn on is by unplugging the battery and leaving it unplugged for a couple mins, then plugging it back in and press the power button. I can use it and restart it.
If I shut it down I have to pull the battery again to turn it back on. Is this a battery issue or motherboard. Can it be fixed?

generally this problem occurs due to two main reason SMC faulty or battery problem

@amily - Apple Diagnostics often won't tell you much any more. I try to use tools that will give a better insight into whats happening thats why when ever there is an issue with batteries, chargers or the system charging logic I use CoconutBattery at the easiest tool a person can use. True, Apple does give you some of this info which you can glean from the battery menu and the system report but this is just easier and quicker and free!
Where do I get it from?
To get to the diagnostics you need to reboot your system and hold the D key

As I explained diagnostics is limited on what it can tell you. Most of the time it tells you to visit an Apple Store or authorized service center to get your system repaired and not much else ;-}
Please run CoconutBattery and post the screenshot it is so much better for these types of issues.

I downloaded and ran this program. It said my battery was good. Then the Mac shutoff on its own on me. I tried posting the pics, but the add link won't work.
Try again its a bit tricky. open the image tool box and drag the picture over once in the tool box click on it again it will post. Really need to see what the other info says.

@scooby316 - Thanks! Well the battery looks good & so does the charger. So we can rule these out.
Sadly, you have a problem with the power switching logic, this logic turns on the system. Did you have a liquid spill into your keyboard at some point?
I am working on this for a friend. She said she never spilled anything on it. Inside the case there was a little corner that looked like something might have spilled. But I don't see anything on the board anywhere.
