Power button not working after 3rd party battery replacement

The power button on my iPad will turn off at the long press but won't lock the screen.

I haven't had the screen replaced. I simply had the battery replaced by a third party seller.

What could have possibly gone wrong ?

Any advise is appreciated.

The issue is caused by either a damaged or missing smart cover sensor which is generally behind on the glass itself.

This is just a guess but it could be that the sensor got damaged when the iPad was serviced.

Or the digitizer glass was damaged during the replacement and the digitizer glass was replaced with one that does not have the smart cover sensor on them.

Now if you do not have a smart cover or intend to use one you should be able to disable the smart cover locking in the iPad settings to allow you the power button to work properly instead of getting it fixed.

I recommend taking it back to where you got the battery replaced from and get them to fix it.

Great answer, thank you for the help.

Also out of curiosity and genuine need in this circumstance, why would the smart cover sensor interfere with the power button's lock function ?

Because the smart cover function is also used to disable the lock button when the smart cover is covering the screen, when it can't read the sensor it makes the lock button not work properly.

Basically the smart covers have magnets in them and when the magnet is close enough to the sensor it will cause the screen to lock and turn off the screen.
