MacBook Pro constantly thinks its lid is closed?

Hi there,

Ive worked for years on component level repair logic boards etc but this problem has me stumped, the machine switches on but then instantly acts as if the lid has been shut therefore going into sleep mode, the only way I can get the device to work is buy running it in clamshell mode then installing insomnia (if you haven't heard its a program that can prevent your Mac sleeping with the lid closed). I couldn't find an issue with the logic board but I again tested it with a known working one. but still nothing. then I thought they may be sensors etc in the screen so I changed that too but still nothing. What else is there ? I'm stumped. I might also add there is no sign of water damage and the machine passes diagnostics in clamshell mode.

I have the same problem with my wife's MBP 13inch 2012 it works fine until you open the screen past perpendicular then it goes into sleep mode.

These models only activate the trackpad (allowing it to move and click) when the LID_OPEN signal goes to the trackpad; this signal is activated when both the left and right hall effect sensors detect the magnet from the screen lid (a new feature to prevent magnets accidentally setting the screen off, since old models just had one hall effect sensor).

Your trackpad likely had a small amount of corrosion which was shorting LID_OPEN to ground, which would disable the signal and turn the screen off. Something to look out for in future :)

sounds great I can only assume it was the trackpad. good to keep in mind as I could've ended up spending a lot of money lucky for me I had the parts to test it .

You'll need to do some sleuthing! You'll need a magnet and some steel paperclips. Hopefully you can get the system to alter its state.

Take the paperclips and slide it down on the inside surface of the lid around the side and top edges they should stick to the magnets that are located on the lid. Carefully, fold down the display so you can reference the location on the uppercase when the magnets hit. Now try your magnet sliding it on the uppercase when the clips where to see if you can find the Hall effect detectors location (a wax pencil marker might help). One of the magnet locations should cause the the display to turn off. In any case it will give you an idea where to look for the hall effect sensor within the system.

If you review the older Unibody 15" hard drive cable we can see the Hall sensor (marked in Red):

So it can be well hidden! I've not serviced this system yet so I can't tell you were its hidden.

Yeah I understand I've got plenty of cables I can find one. apart from a trackpad replacement and the repair of water damaged boards this is the first problem I've came across with that can be solved quick, I gave something similar to your idea stated above ago but the machine will not respond to anything the second the device is on, the lid thinks its closed I had a go at absoutly gutting the machine including the horribly adheared battery and can't find anything in the top case I'm going to take a look at the hinge mechanism as this is the only other place I can think, if it helps you to answer the problem the device still switches on automatically when the lid is opened which I thought it shouldn't do if there is a sensor faulty or something.

Im going to take a look in this area too just incase its similar to the 12 inch

That would to a magnet! Not the sensor. The sensor needs to be wired back to the logic board. I wouldn't put it past Apple to do a switch-a-roo on us putting the sensor in the lid and the magnet in the uppercase! Does the location you marked appear to be a magnet?

Hi all,

Am wondering if I'm looking at trackpad replacement also as I have same problem on a 13" MBP mid-2012 (A1278). Reece referred to "these models" and as Lewis' is from 2016 I'm not sure if mine is included in that family...?

Thanks for any help guys. I see trackpad cable is available on its own so might try changing that first.

Cheers, Sam.

There is no lid sensor functionality through the trackpad on your model; the lid sensor is on the battery indicator. Unplug this and if the issue is resolved, it will be this. If not, it is related to the SMC_LID signal being pulled low on the logic board.

Thanks Reece, I replaced the trackpad this morning but it made no difference. Have just disconnected battery indicator cable as per your suggestion but also no effect, so guess I'm looking at replacing SMC on the board..? Not sure I'm up for a job like that but seems the only option...(?)

Cheers, for the tip anyway.

Dose the MacBook certainly go into sleep mode ? as this fault can be misinterpreted and instead be a backlight/display issue too

さんによる

Thanks Lewis, I'm using it now so I don't think it goes into sleep mode (unless I tell it to), but no activity from trackpad, keyboard (after boot), or screen...

hi all,

I have very similar issue, the only difference is that after SMC reset my Mac(late 16, 13”, Touch Bar) feels ok until I close the lid, it seems that there is no LID_OPEN signal. After SMC reset it works perfectly (sleeps, wakes up, turns on/off) until I close the lid. It happens in safe mode and after clear reinstallation of the system. Should I also try trackpad or start with hall sensors?

Hi!

I am currently having the same problem.

My problem started after the replacement of the keyboard by Apple.

When I close the cover of the macbook it is only possible to turn it on again using the SMC command.

Any solution?

Thanks

Hi, I'm having this problem as well. Have you found a solution?

さんによる

Same here. I'm able to hook up an additional monitor and can use my computer via the other monitor, but the screen on my MBP remains black.

さんによる

Hi, I've literally got the same issue after replacing my battery. Has there been any updates on this issue?

さんによる

I am in exactly same situation. Needed to change keyboard and asked Apple service to do it. Now, once I close notebook lid, Macbook does not wake up until I just reset it (holding long time powerbutton).

Hi all. just found a secondary solution. free of charge. mine have the same issue, closing lid won't turn the monitor up, but if I touch a small magnet on the left side , somewhere where the speaker are in between Caps look and Tab keys its turn on like nothing happen. I'll try and put a picture.
