To your update: Apple over the generations have used different methods of applying the sensor. The first gens had a stuck on sensor, the second which you have here in your image is leveraging the internal sensor the drive makers added. The newest generation uses a spare pin on the power cable connection to gain access to this built-in sensor and needs custom firmware.

Lets look at it this way: A Ford Thunderbird engine won't fit the newest Ford car would it? Yet they do the same thing! Over time things get improved as in this case.

But we still have a problem as the SATA SSD does not offer an internal sensor for the system to access directly. Which is why we need the OWC sensor cable to offer SMC services a means to see the needed sensor. Not to deal with high temps a HD would have but just to get the needed thermal input otherwise the system goes into Safe Mode! Fan going into high RPM. In addition the newer models the CPU also goes into Safe Mode as well lowering its clock cycle so the CPU doesn't overheat.

Yes, you'll need a thermal sensor if you are swapping out your SATA HDD for a SATA SSD. Here is the part you'll need: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for Hard Drive Upgrade for 27" iMacs 2012 and Later. You'll also need an adapter frame: OWC 2.5" to 3.5" Drive Adapter Bracket. Here's the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow: iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display Hard Drive Replacement

You do have a second option here which you might want to look at. If you currently don't have a PCIe NVMe blade SSD installed you could put one in which would give you still better performance! iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display SSD Replacement

If you do have a Fusion Drive config you'll need to break the fusion drive set before you remove the HDD. Also keep in mind the Fusion Drive blade SSD is quite small so you most likely will want to swap out to a larger drive.

Because that is how Apple designed that specific model.

I have fitted a 1TB WD blue ssd to my late 2015 imac 27”, it had no hard drive before, just the PCIe SSD. All I needed to source was the Sata/power cable.

I did NOT fit any thermal sensor and it works perfectly, no fan spin or any other problems. I also replaced the PCIe SSD with a Samsung NVMe 1TB unit with an adapter, this also works perfectly.

I conclude that at least on late 2015 model. NO thermal sensor is required. The system reads the drive temperatures fine so they must now use the Smart data.

Its been working for 3 months now like this, don’t waste your hard earned money on un-neccesary stuff.
