Which SSD to replace HDD. Con che SSD sostituire l'HDD

Hi everyone, I'm going to replace the HDD in my iMac mid 2010 21.5'' with an SSD but I have no idea about the type of SSD to use. Can somebody recommend me some of them that won't have any problem of compatibility or similar.

Thanks everyone in advice.

grazie mille in anticipo

You can install a mac compatible ssd , but i recommend you to install MLC based ssd if you are not on a budget , because is more durable. That is also mac compatible. Very low amount of ssd 's is not compatible with UNIX , but make that when you install the ssd make sure that you have the trim enabled on it. Full explanation here :

Also the mac os version that you plan to install on a non apple ssd must be 10.10 and upper.... Again you can Buy TLC ssd, but i recommend MLC if you are not on budged.

You can check non mac compatible ssd's on the image that i am attach.

This is not compatible:

Block Image

@aggourin - This info is a bit dated! You can run a simple terminal command to enable 3rd party SSD's that support TRIM in Yosemite, Sierra & High Sierra MacOS's this way: Open a terminal session then type - trimforce enable and hit enter. I would also check with the SSD makers web site to make sure its supported.

If you are using older Mac OS-X OS's you will need to use an app Trim Enabler to do it.

I know that is dated, but is still useful! Anyone can buy non compatible ssd that may be was on old stock (used or new) or have it on an older machine and need to insert it on another machine...

@aggourin - Its the way to enable TRIM which is what I was commenting on.

The age of the SSD is not an issue here as long as the SSD maker has noted it works in Mac's. There are very few 2.5" SSD's that don't work presently.

You might think about swapping out your optical drive with a Carrier to hold your SSD. Here's the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow: Installing iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389 Dual Hard Drive. That way you can make it your boot drive and still have your data on your older HDD.

this way will I have a sensible increase in the iMac speed or the older HD would influence it?

You'll get the full speed of the SSD once you set it as your startup drive. When ever I can I do dual drive configs as you can have the speed of the SSD for your boot drive and the deep storage of your traditional HDD - A win-win approach!

You also won't need to buy anything larger than 512 GB as well for your SSD.
