iMac will not boot properly

My iMac will not boot properly. It starts up and there is a chime but the progress bar will not get more that a third of the way then it stops. It starts in recovery mode and it starts in safe boot which suggested to me that it was a software issue or a problem with the boot partition. I have replaced the internal hard drive and installed a completely new system (Yosemite) but still it will not get any further under a normal boot.

I have noticed that there is no "Built in Speaker" option available in the System Sound preference. Would a faulty sound card cause these kind of symptoms during boot up?

If so do you have any way that I can verify that this is the problem?

Update (09/28/2017)

Hello Dan. Thanks for your reply. I cannot get the iMac to boot in to diagnostics mode. I don't think it will do it without the installation discs (it's actually my sister-in-laws mac and she is trying to find the original discs).

I have run TechTools Pro though and that did not return any errors. On the recommendation of someone else I also ran EtreCheck and that too returned no errors.

The drive that came out was an apple installed 320GB WD3200AAJS-40VWA1 which I replaced with a 1TB WDC WD1001FALS-40K1B0 drive. I replaced it because the original drive was almost full.

However, the startup issue was there before I replaced the hard drive so that would suggest to me that it must be some kind of hardware error.

Update (09/30/2017)

I have waded through this log but I am none the wiser. This is the log from powering up to the point where there appears to be no more activity and I have to force shutdown. Not sure if this is helpful or not.

Update (10/03/2017)

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the advice. To be honest I'd pretty much gone through this process already but not with El Capitan. I still have the original hard drive which I can access all of her files from if I mount it as an external drive so I'm not concerned about that aspect too much.

After having run the El Capitan installer the progress bar appears to freeze but then I get the audible voice over instruction even though the first page of setup is not showing. I left it for a while thinking it may catch up. When I returned and woke the mac the screen had changed to the county location but would not let me select anything. I moved the cursor keys up and down but nothing happened. Again I left it and then came back to wake it and Ireland was highlighted (it was showing United States) but still no movement.

It is almost as if the system is working but the video is freezing.

One thing i did notice in the log file was in the last portion it mentioned something about Window Server creating a screen shot. (See below) Do you think the firmware could be damaged?

Lets try running diagnostics. When restarting the system D as outlined in this Apple T/N: How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac. Did you get any error codes?

One of the issues in these older systems when replacing a old drive is getting the correct one. Can you give us the make and model on what you put in.

Update (09/30/2017)

Well, the good news is you put the correct drive in!

This system only has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface so you can only use a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) or an older SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) fixed speed drive. Or one that is able to auto adjust to the systems SATA ports speed.

As for the log file can't see anything standing out but there does appear to be something running in background.

I would recommend you first make a good backup, create a bootable OS installer drive with El Capitan (OS-X 10.11.x) being the highest this system can support (you'll need 4 GB of RAM). Here's how: How to make a bootable OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer drive. Then reformat the drive and re-install the OS. I would also do a PRAM reset: Startup key combinations for Mac as well.

As for restoring apps and data, Use care here! Load up what she needs from the App Store and her data files. See if the system is stable then. If it is lets make a fresh full backup on a new drive so its easier to get back to this point. Now carefully add in from clean installers anything else you needs for custom apps. I would recommend doing one at a time and if you can make a second fresh backup to safe your self some effort once you go one step to far (lets say after three or four are installed if she has a lot).

Update (10/03/2017)

Did you first do a reformat of the drive from the external installer drive? Try again this time run the secure erase one time so we are sure the drive is stable. If it is able to run through without any issues give the installer a second try.

While your log shows a call to Firmware:

Bootstrapped Creating a default store:0 SpotLoc:(null) SpotVerLoc:(null) occlude:0 /Volumes/firmwaresyncd.rdaZe230/09/2017 11:41:08.814 WindowServer[129]

This is just the process of loading the firmware to RAM. Its one of the processes of loading the OS into RAM. I don't see any errors here.

The only thing I can think of here is if the logic board has a problem. This could be as simple of a bad RAM module or a deeper issue where the board its self is starting to fail.

But before we go down that path lets see if we can get the drive prepped with a fresh OS.

Hi Dan,

Yes I created an El Capitan installation drive on a USB Flash drive. Booted from that and initialised the internal drive using the secure erase using the first level. Not the quickest but the next quickest. I formatted it as a GUID scheme, Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

I was not able to complete the setup process under normal boot conditions as the screen was not refreshing to keep up with it. I have had to restart in safe mode in order to complete the setup.

It was my understanding that Safe mode simply disabled any third party system extensions and software.

What i can't understand is, how, with a completely clean system, will it not boot up normally from the startup drive? Yet it will boot up in safe mode.

I can't work out what safe mode is disabling which allows it to boot up, unless it's a problem with the video and the machine is in fact booting up successfully but not displaying it on the screen (if that makes any sense?)

You may have interrupted the EFI firmware update that is needed.

Try doing the OS install again (no need to redo the format of the drive this time) let the system be as it does take a bit of time when it does the EFI update. The screen will go blank give is a good hour or two at that time point (yes it can take that long in the older models).

Safe mode is a trimmed OS. Not only is 3rd party extensions not loaded some of Apples extensions are also not loaded as an example the extended graphics driver.

How much RAM do you have in the system? I would strongly recommend maxing it out at 6 GB. The newer OS's do require more memory to run so if you only have 2 GB that could be a factor.

Hello Dan,

I did as you suggested and it did the same thing. It gets to the point where voiceover starts speaking instructions without displaying the first screen of the setup.

In between time my sister in law found her original discs and I have run the AHT in the extensive test mode and it returned no errors.

I did think about taking right back to it's original system to see if I can at least get it to boot normally.

I have to say I'm properly stumped.
