Scanner won't connect to our computer

After plugging scanner into computer and turning scanner on, the scanner gives the message that it "cannot communicate with the scanner......"

I have the same problem, except that all I changed was the computer the scanner was supposed to connect to. The computer is a MacBook Pro 13" with Retina display; the old computer was MacBook (not Pro), and it connected well with the scanner; the scanner is Epson V500 Photo and connects only rarely. I think it's possible that the cable for the scanner abd the place where it is supposed to connect firmly are not entirely compatible. I've tried another cable but get the same "cannot connect" message, and I don't seem to be able to connect even rarely. I don't think that a newer scanner would work with my current MacBook Pro, and I don't want to get a new computer yet, or upgrade the OS if I don't have to. They serve my purposes fine at this time. I can take a photo of whatever I want to "scan," and send it to myself, but it seems silly not to be able to use a scanner that I used to be able to connect to my computer. When the two worked together, it was just wonderful.
