Will A1085 or A1013 PB 17" screens work in A1229 MBP?

Hello! Just curious if anyone knows whether or not 17" Aluminum PowerBook screens from A1085 or A1013 models will work in a 2.4GHZ 17" A1229 MacBook Pro. The Pro has a shattered screen and I'd like to use one from one of my scrap PowerBooks, if possible.

Anyhow, just curious if someone has experience with this before I start tearing stuff apart. I looked up the models on iFixit and elsewhere, but not enough of the screens are stocked anywhere I could find to figure out compatibility.

The LCD screen LG Philips Model: LP171WE2 (TL)(02) would fit in the 17" PB G4 high res. last model A1139 1.67 ghz (1680 X 1050) and in many MBP 17" models before the unibody.

I finally tried this out...the PowerBook had a good LP171W01 (A4)(K2), which I moved to the 17" MacBook Pro 2.4GHZ. Unfortunately it didn't work, and the screen was solid black. This is a known good screen in the PowerBook. The MacBook works otherwise (it worked fine with its previous cracked screen), and works great with external video with the PowerBook screen in it (while the screen is black). The cracked screen that was in the MacBook is a LP171WE2 (TL)(A4). It's unfortunate the PowerBook screen didn't work...I was expecting it to, because it fit perfectly and the connector matched. I guess my question is, does anyone know from a technical standpoint why the PowerBook screen didn't work? I'm curious to know. Also, I see (TL)(A1) through (TL)(A3) pretty cheap on eBay (as low as $92), but (TL)(A4) seems to be in a different category and in the $175 range. I'm guessing it's "high res". The PowerBook screen was not a "TL"...will a cheaper TLA1, TLA2, or TLA3 work in this machine, or do I specifically need a TLA4? Thanks!

Ended up ordering a (TL)(04). I hate to spend that much, but the laptop still has a lot of $$$ value, so it'll be worthwhile.

Not sure which models will work or not........someone else may be able to answer your question better then I can I'm sure.

if you need to know which display you currently have in both machines, the model number or other information, this is a command line (terminal window) that will show your LCD model number and your color profile. (assuming you can hook up the laptop with the shattered screen to an external monitor).

ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

(this makes it easier to find information about each screen and the specs for each screen which may give you a better idea if your swap will work).

My best guess would be no, since the machines are quite different in age the data cable that carries information to the LCD screen is probably not the same.

If your swap will not work you will know the model # screen you need making it easier to find the correct replacement and parting out or selling the older machine, assuming you no longer need it would more then likely pay for a new screen for the macbook pro.

Thanks Brian! Wow, that is definitely an interesting way to go about it that I would never have thought of. The machines don't have drives at the moment, but when they do, I'll give it a shot. The incompatibility tends to be with the connector on the back of the screens, so it'll be interesting to see if the info it gives (manufacturer part number?) leads me in a direction that allows me to figure that out. I've found a lot of various models are compatible...for instance, I use screens from PowerBook Titaniums to replace dead screens in PowerBook Aluminums all the time. Anyway, thanks!
