My Thunderbolt Display Dead - What should I do?

Hi I'm hoping you could help me make an informed decision on what to do with my 27" Thunderbolt Display. I purchased it from Apple refurbished about 4 years ago. Yesterday it suddenly stopped working. My AppleCare is expired.

The USB and Thunderbolt peripherals don't work and the built in MagSafe doesn't power my laptop either.

I've tried all the steps I could find online to fix the problem:

  1. Resetting the PRAM/NVRAM
  2. Resetting the SMC
  3. Trying a different Thunderbolt Cord and changing outlets.

It has been completely and utterly unresponsive.

My questions:

  1. What’s your opinion on what could be the problem?
  2. Is it worth my time to get a new power cable and see if that works?
  3. Is there any way I can narrow down what the problem could be? Would there be anything in the log that contains a hint to what failed?
  4. Is it affordable to bring it to Apple to be repaired since the Apple Care is expired? What do you think the expense would be? (I don’t want to pay over $200.)
  5. Since I'm getting no power at all I'm assuming the power supply or ac adapter. Is there way to be absolutely sure - so I know which guide to follow.
  6. Is there anything else I can do to diagnose/fix the display?

These displays are still kick ass! It's worth repairing.

The clues you have here are telling me you have a bad power supply or the system is not getting power for some reason (AC cord or the socket). You'll need a multimeter to check continuity of the socket and measure the voltages of the power supply.

Are you up to fixing your display your self?

Do you have the needed tools and skills? If you are I would review the IFIXIT guides here and the displays teardown: Apple Thunderbolt Display

While there is no power supply guide the teardown offers enough info on how to take it out: Apple Thunderbolt Display Teardown Step 13 is where its taken out. Do be careful here! You can get zapped by the caps in the power supply so watch where you touch!

Having an issue with screen-Macbook Air connection myself...not sure if it's the port on the Macbook or the cable on the Display. Any suggestions?

Can your be clearer on what you are encountering. Your description is too vague.

Fixed it by first replacing the cable & harness. Still had weird flickering that I fixed by wrapping tin foil around the cable (the T'bolt half).
