I dropped my Galaxy Note 5 in water.

I didn't want to purchase my Galaxy Note 5 due to fixed SD Card & battery but esp. SD card. 1st time dropped a cell phone in H20~4" of clear water, top up & pulled out quickly, LCD screen flashed on/off a few times, (there were minor scratches, tiny outside edge chips before dropped) the front face went black. I did not have any rice so I used a cool setting on a blow-dryer a few minutes on sides. I took it to Best Buy (where I bought it) and we hooked it up to my computer to charge it and the green light at the top was on the whole time but still black face so couldn't access it or download Samsung Smart Switch software. A good thing green light was on, a sign the SD card probably was OK. I have insurance but only get it replaced. 5 hrs later, I put it in rice for 48 hrs. and after charging, no green light shows up. I had phone deactivated & activated my old Note 2. so still want to retrieve contacts, photos and data. It is a cumbersome phone to take apart to gain access to my SD card only "Just-in-Case" it works but worth a try...not $300.00 worth so help? I've seen 3 YouTube videos to take it apart and not one of those show which part is the SD Card and if we can easily take if off the mother board and method of accessing it??? HELP!!! Katherine

Hi,

Are you asking about the external SD Card? If so why can't you just extract it and read it in a card reader?

If you are asking about the internal storage, then you'll probably find that the that it is permanently mounted on the systemboard and would require the correct tools, expertise and equipment to first remove it and then if possible retrieve any data from it. That is if it hasn't already been damaged.

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

Rice is good to eat but does nothing to fix the problems caused by corrosion

Don't Put Your Device in Rice. Here's Why...

First do not turn on your phone and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize further damage.''

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% and is not as effective. If you do check the label to verify the amount

Here is a link that in general, describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

You may have to replace the battery as it is very hard to recover a battery from water damage.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit guide(s) for repairing your phone.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service and ask for a quote for a repair.

If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Hey, I know this answer is probably too late, but for anyone looking for an answer, here are my experiences.

I dropped my galaxy note 5 into water for no more than 3 seconds. For a few minutes after dropping it in the water, it seemed to work just fine. Then the screen starting glitching and flickering, and then the screen went black, the on/off button did not work, and the only thing that gave me hope that it was still on was by pressing the home button, which would light up the back button and the split screen button/switch app button, whatever it is called.

I read somewhere online that dry oats works better than rice. My fiancee advised to heat the oats to help dry the phone faster. I did what she and the internet advised and left the phone in the oatmeal for, I kid you not, 2 HOURS. Not 24 or 36 with rice, but 2 hours. Every now and then she or I would check it, each time we pulled it out, it would improve some. The screen status went from black to some sad shade of green to partially flickering for a moment or two, to flickering for a bit longer, and so on. Eventually the screen stayed on fully. After one more go with turning the screen on and off again, the screen lit up like nothing ever happened.

TL;DR: Put the phone in heated (not too hot) dry oats. Check it occasionally. As long as you don't have -severe- water damage (Like, leaving the phone in water for 10 seconds, or if the phone is either not turning on or the screen is not responsive) it should work within a few hours if less.

Hi @wellheck

Did you read the link in the answer above? Don't Put Your Device in Rice. Here's Why...

It is not the fact that it is water, although that is bad especially if the battery is still connected, as water is an electrical conductor. It is the "minerals" contained in the water that causes corrosion problems. Corrosion starts immediately, especially if it is aided by the battery still being connected (electrolysis) and its' effects can only be removed by cleaning it away, either by using an ultrasonic bath or Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+, not by just absorbing the moisture.

You may think that it is alright by doing what you did but guaranteed at sometime in the future you will start to experience problems if it hasn't been cleaned properly.

wow, i am sorry that i have no idea about your problem. but if you want to recover you data from your water-damaged Galaxy Note 5, try to use some data recovery program to assist you, such as Android aata recovery. it could scan your phone and display your data, including the deleted and existing data, so that you could recover them selectively.

Read the following article about how to do it for more details if you need.

Hoping it will work for you and you could get data back from water-damaged Galaxy Note 5 successfully.Good luck to you!!:D
