Why does it do this?

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima, when I crank the car up and put it in drive it stars running bad or might go dead. So I crank it back up and put it in first and start off and put it straight to drive it runs fine, doesn't run hot or anything, but if I stop at a stop sign it'll start running bad again and have to repeat the same step, from first straight to drive, any idea what this might be?

@hutch6 not sure where you are but I would get the OBD scanned to see if it throws any codes. Sounds like it is coming from the transmission.

Shane, This could be caused by a few things. It sounds like your transmission torque converter lock up/solenoid may be malfunctioning/sticking. Take into a good shop, have them scan for trouble codes, diagnose and estimate repair. Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.
