Logic board died. How do I harvest parts and use functional pieces?

So I have a few questions. I'll lay out the situation and ask them near the end.

In May 2016 my graphics card failed. I purchased the replacement through the apple store and had it repaired for ~$800. In August 2016 my second internal drive 1TB failed and I purchased the replacement and repair through the apple store for ~$200. Now in October 2016 my logic board fails and I figure I should probably just buy a new computer. What is the best way to harvest parts from this computer?

• I'd like to sell the graphics card I just replaced on Kijij. It cost me $800 and it hasn't been used much. Can I separate this from the logic board easily and sell it?

• I'd like to use the display as a second screen for a new computer. Will this display function without an internal graphics card?

• I'd like to remove both hard drives from the iMac and put them in portable enclosures. Will the iMac function in target display mode without a hard drive for the operating system?

• If I remove the display from the iMac and logic board completely, is there a way to connect it to a computer to act as a second display?

Any advice would be great. I'm basically wondering how to get some money back from these useless repairs, and how to harvest functionality from the remaining parts.

Contact a senior advisor with Apple and get your money back or take them to small claims course and show them the link I just gave.

The last four characters of the serial number must contain one of the following groups (for example, xxxxxxxxDHJQ):

● DHJQ, DHJW, DL8Q, DNGH, DNJ9, or DMW8

● DPM1, DPM2, DPNV, DNY0, DRVP, DY6F, F610

Thanks Mayer! My serial number matches this specification. I'll try calling them and see they're feeling generous. You guys are way more helpful than the people working at the apple store. In my numerous frustrated talks with them, they never mentioned this graphics card replacement program.

I would have my lawyer handle this one. Yes you will win in court on the repair but I feel Apple lied and deceived you and should be liable for triple damages.

You've got a long list here ;-} Let me cherry pick the ones I can answer.

While you can recover the parts from your system that are still working and sell them. You'll need to make sure you have access to the needed packing material. A sturdy box, anti-static bags and peanuts to support the part within the correctly sized box. Otherwise you run the risk of shipping a part that doesn't survive getting to the buyer and then shipping it back to you for a refund.

As to taking the parts out you do need to use care as you don't want them damaged in the process. Make sure you use an anti-static mat and wrist strap that is properly grounded. Use the proper tools and follow the IFIXIT guides here: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Repair guides while we don't have a guide to take the logic board out here there is enough guides to get to most of the parts. If you surf the web you'll find a few Vids on how its done.

As for reusing the screen, you may want to follow this question: What are the connector names to the display? This is not an easy retrofit.

As to reusing the drives: Sure you can get external hard drive cases to hold the drives. You might want to think what would be the best interface (FireWire, USB or Thunderbolt). As for Target Mode that function is part of the systems BIOS (EFI). You don't need a working HD in the system. I'm not sure I follow your logic here. If you are repurposing the display it won't be able to offer target mode.

Thanks Dan! I'll probably take the hard drives out repurpose them. It'd probably be easiest to use target display mode rather than removing the lcd screen and tinkering with it. Do you know if the graphics card is necessary for target display mode to work?

Sadly, I'm sure its needed. I hope Apple will service your system as Mayer pointed out. If they do Leave the system intact and either use it or sell it as a full working system Vs trying to break it down for its parts.
