iPhone 4: Short battery life after replacing LCD

Last week I replaced the LCD on my iPhone 4 with a Complete LCD Screen Assembly that I purchased at www.chinaontrade.com.

After replacing the LCD, my iPhone 4 works great again, except for the battery life which runs empty very quickly now.

Did I do something wrong, or could the battery drainage be caused by the new LCD?

Regards

Erik.

It seems unlikely the screen would cause the battery to drain so quickly, but anything's possible. Is your iPhone warmer than usual? Does the battery drain quickly even if you leave the screen off (in "standby") or powered off completely? How many charge cycles have you gone through since you replaced the screen, and how long are you letting it charge between discharge cycles?

Thanks for the follow up questions. The unit doesn't feel warmer than before the LCD replacement (which I did 3 days ago). Since then the phone has 3 complete charges of 2-3 hours.

Yesterday during the day / evening I used quite some internet browsing over 3G and WiFi, and capacity dropped from 100% at noon to 40% in the evening. Overnight the phone was in stand by, and dropped from 40% to 15% battery capacity in the morning (seems a lot, but maybe push emails kept it busy...).

I've reset all settings and switched of push emails from my office exchange account. Only push info from mobile me is active now. Phone has mainly been in standby with light wifi browsing and capacity remains high the last couple of hours.

I'll check if it also drains when switched off.

Regards

Erik.

Thanks for the followup. I wonder if a bad antenna connection could cause the battery to drain faster -- mind testing to see if the battery still drains when the device is in Airplane mode?

I think you are correct that a bad antenna connection is the problem.

In Airplane mode, there is hardly any battery drainage. I'll open the device again and check if the antenna is correctly connected. I have a weak GSM signal at home, maybe this increases the pwer usage.

If there isn't much drainage in Airplane mode, then it does sound like the battery drain is due to antenna issues. GSM (and 3G) phones negotiate signal strength with the tower, and will use the minimum transmit power necessary for the tower to decode the signal -- so a weak GSM signal at home would increase power usage, as would any other problem with the antenna.

iFixit mentions that finger oils that get deposited on interior surfaces of the phone can cause antenna problems, so you should follow the teardown guide through step 7, where they talk about cleaning the contacts with Windex.

I am more likely to think, that a cheap screen could be the issue? If the phone has reception and has the normal amounts of bars in a situation where you know it should have that many bars then I would exclude the the antenna problem. That would be the case if the phone is constantly trying to connect to a network.

Or apple has made their devices sense that a non original part is fitted in and the new parts become voltage vampires.

Could it be that the battery may shorted circuited ?
