Wifi and GPS not working after water damage

Hello,

My OnePlus got dropped in water. I had to change the battery and then it seemed to work fine. However GPS isn't getting a fix and the WiFi doesnt connect unless I'm close to the router. Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks !

Hi,

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

First you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone.

Then you need to dis-assemble the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ to remove all traces of corrosion and water.

Here is a link that in general, describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

You will probably have to replace the battery as it is very hard to recover a battery from water damage.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again

Hello,

Thanks for the comment. I wasn't clear earlier so here goes - I replaced the battery and the phone works quite well - except for the GPS fix and WiFi. I have no problem connecting to the work WiFi but phone doesn't connect to home network unless it's very close to the router.

Hi, The WiFi antenna connection may have been damaged either by the fall or by the water (corrosion). Either way it has to be opened. Hopefully it seems that it may be not too badly affected, but it won't fix itself.
