Is there any HDD diagnosis software for HandyCams?

Hi,

There's a problem with my hard drive, possibly a bad sector. I had to remove the data and format it and it was working for some minutes (22 min) and then it had HDD access problem. At this point it does not save the records anymore and always shows "Recovering data" after you stop the record and there will be no record. I have tried formatting it using the camera firmware, but the problem persists.

I could not format it via a computer though and I am looking for a way to have a complete format via a service software if there is such a thing.

Do you know any software that is capable of doing such diagnostics?

Thanks!

I'm suspecting the drive has really died this time. I don't think you'll be able to recover it and even if you do it will be short lived.

The better direction here is to replace the drive. In the process you might think about going to a larger drive as well. The drive you'll need to get is either a 40 or 80 GB Toshiba 1.8" ZIF PATA (UDMA/100) drive.

Here is the drives spec sheet: Toshiba MK8009GAH 40 & 80GB UDMA/100 4200RPM 2MB 1.8" PATA/LIF Ultra Mobile Hard Drive.

How about using a universal adapter that will handle ziff drives and zero it out?

@mayer - I'm sure that might help give it a little more time. But, I'd hate to loose my child's graduation or wedding vids due to a flaky drive when replacing it would be a more permanent solution.

@danj I would be very much disappointed with it as there was no incident to cause such a drive failure. Anyways, thanks for your answer. BTW, could we find an identical to original 120GB HD drive if we choose to?

@mayer , how does a universal adapter work on zif drive? How can I zero it out?

You should be able to find the larger drive as well. If you pull the cover off you should be able to find the make and model of the drive so you can search for a replacement.

You'll need to pop the drive out of the camera and then use a PATA to USB case like this one: 1.8-inch ZIF LIF (iPod) Hard Drive Enclosure Case for Toshiba Hitachi Seagate Samsung Drives with ZIF-40 Connector. There are also adapters which also have the needed interface.

@afshinmp the drive used is a Toshiba MK1231GAL 120GB and the Sony part number for that is 1-840-186-21 Check on here to see how to replace it. Your HDD does not use Windows or OS operating system hence formatting it with a computer will not work. A Zif to USB adapter like this may work to retrieve some of the old files, after that replace the drive to ensure your camera will not run into issues while you are recording your important events.
