Can my iMac handle 4TB?

I have a late 2009 27inch i7 IMAC with 1 TB. I want to upgrade my IMAC to a 4TB and 32GB RAM. Can my Imac handle it? And if yes. Do you have any recommendation for a 4TB drive? I am considering a WD 4TB drive. But I don't know which color to choose. Any recommendations?

Thanks you!

Here's a good write up on what the differences are within the Western Digital family of drives: Understanding the WD Rainbow.

Be aware your system has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface. You'll need to make sure the drive you do get is compatible. A SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive which does not offer a means to run at SATA II speed will not work reliably here.

Make sure your systems firmware is up to date. Follow this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers. You need to be at this level or newer.

I was successful in upgrading to a 4 TB Western Digital Black. Yes, it will work. Heads up though! Your fans may rev up at the maximum RPM after your upgrade, you will need a programs such as SSD fan control to regain fan sanity.

This one's my personal favorite.

@alinorne - Is that a temperature sensor issue? Did they make different sensors for the different hard drive brands?

Will Apple part number 922-9225 fix this issue if I use a Western Digital hard drive?

@alinorne - Kevin, Did you forgot the thermal sensor? We don't like fan over-ride software as we have learned (the hard way I might add) it shortens the life of the system and is not dynamic enough to be useful. Best to put in the correct hardware sensor for the drive/system.

Some of the newer Seagate & WD drives don't offer the needed internal sensor hookup so I go with this now: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2009-2010 Hard Drive Upgrade which places an external sensor on the drive instead of using the internal sensor within the drive.

Aside from the fan, any other problem with you computer? And is your computer same as mine? A late 2007, i7, 27 inch imac?

さんによる

@yisiling - what are you smoking? It's a 2009 machine. There's no fan problem yet. If you are having an issue, please post a new question. As to the comments on Kevins answer, he's new and we are attempting to help him become a better answer provider and think before he puts his foot in his mouth (which he has been doing).

@mayer Hi, I don't know much about computers, and since Kevin mentioned that he had a fan problem, so I asked more about it and his experience with the imac. I don't think I was breaking the rules since it's just a follow up of my questions.
