Can a battery be checked with a volt meter?

Can a battery be checked or tested with a Fluke digital volt/ohm meter? If so what terminals can i check this at the USB connector of an itouch. Would the terminal connectors be the same for all generation?

The technique varies by the type of battery. In this case, the iPod Touch has a Lithium-ion Polymer battery.

Actually no power to the itouch and no communication with itunes. Tried just about everything to reset it and restore it. Still no response. I did take it apart and checked the voltage at the battery terminals and it was around .625 volts just over a half a volt. I even tried with the ipod USB connector connected. Still no change in voltage. My guess it's shorted out or has open circuit internally. Checking with a known good battery form my 1st gen itouch it should be around 3.6 volts. My other guess might be a shorted main board. Right now I'm in the process of elimination. Basic components first. By the way... Nice forum.

so if you plug in your iPod to either a power adapter or your computer via USB, does the iPod power up at all?

and are you saying that you tried swapping a known good battery and it still didn't work?

Correct. no power at all both ways. I have not tried to replace the battery due to different gen. types. I only checked for comparason. I had a 1st gen battery in my parts bin. I do not have a 2nd gen. battery. I have one on order and should be installed with in a week or two. I will keep you updated

you can check the voltage of a battery with a VOM, but it won't necessarily tell you the health/capacity of the battery. A dying battery's voltage might look fine just after charging, but it might quickly lose it's charge after running under load.

although the dock connector pinout is the same across all models, I don't believe you can check the battery voltage/status from the dock connector, instead open up the iPod and remove the battery.

are you finding poor battery life with your iPod? if you charge it fully and are noticing a decrease in battery life compared to when it was first new, it's quite possible your battery is dying - they don't last forever, unfortunately. However, they're easy and inexpensive to replace

As far as testing a battery, Use the 10Amp (or greater) scale on your meter. Put the red probe to the positive battery terminal and the black to the negative. A good AAA to D cell will show at least 2 Amps. This is what would be called a destructive test, do not leave the battery connected to the meter for longer than to read the meter. The meter won't be harmed, but you are discharging the battery at a high rate. Just a quick test is OK.

Terry,

That said what should a good ipod (3.7v) battery read?

Yes, a voltmeter can be used to check the voltage of a battery. A voltmeter measures the electrical potential difference, or voltage, between two points in an electrical circuit.
