Is it possible to change an Ipad battery?

An Apple store tech said it was not possible to change an IPad Air 2 battery. When it dies, the Ipad is junk.

I keep my tech stuff a long time (PC is 6 years old, Blackberry Pad is 3 years) but the rated charge cycle on a Li-on battery is about 1000 cycles, so a daily charge/discharge means the Ipad may die in less than 3 years.

Unless something else goes before that, or it really becomes obsolete, I would want to change the battery.

This does get into perspective from Apples point of view they want to sell you a new iPad when your current one dies.

From our perspective it is repairable but tricky! Review this IFIXIT teardown: iPad Air 2 Teardown. As you can see the battery can be removed and it does take some skill and the proper tools to do it.

As a reference here's what parts are available for the iPad Air: iPad Air Parts as you can see someone does sell the battery so it can be replaced. While this is an iPad Air not an iPad Air 2, in time the parts for it will become available, it's just to soon for the Air 2 parts.

Exactly the sort of answer I was looking for. Many thanks Dan.

The real surprise here was an Air battery is only $23.00

Yes you can change the battery, it's just not easy. Shouldn't be an issue for many years though. Keep in mind the 1000 cycles means full discharge to 0% and it doesn't mean the battery will drop dead at charge 1001 but that the capacity of the battery will start to diminish at that point. Take care of the iPad and battery and you'll have nothing to worry about.

I know it does not drop dead at 1001 cycles, nor do I let it go to 0% discharge. I generally get down to about 40% max discharge, and it goes on overnight recharge, maybe 2 or 3 times a week. So at that rate I should get 5 or 6+ years of service.

My answer: I bought the 'max' Apple iPad Air at the time for storage, 128gb thinking I would be able to use this for more than 4 years, and then, here I am, with an 'unstable' battery, at the 4 year mark, loses power so so so fast some days, and then other days is ok, but then I plug it into power at 7% and in three minutes it says it's at 30%? That's not realistic. Seriously! Unstable, and absolutely not reliable. And I want to upgrade anyway, but I am thinking why? If I have this terrible problem with my 'Apple' battery why would I trust Apple with another product with an equivalent battery? Maybe there are Apple iPads out there with improved batteries? It isn't in their current statistics, but, are there Apple products with better batteries?

If you think there is an Apple product with a better battery available at this time, that won't be equally as unstable, please let me know.

@kate - I had a similar issue with may iPad2 a few years ago, surprising it still has its original battery! The trick here is to reset the charging logic as I'm sure your battery is really OK here just very confused ;-}

Today we just can't be without our devices so we tend to 'Top Off' the charge Vs letting it go to zero and recharge at that point. Thats the secret here! Don't always 'Top Off' let it run down and recharge. I do this every three months or so and it solved my battery issue.

The problem is the system doesn't remember the zero set so it creeps up. Given the state of your battery you'll likely need to do this quite a few times to push the set point back down. Here is a good general info Apple TN: Batteries. Also make sure you have the correct charger for your device (10 or 12 Watt). The lower wattage unit will take a little bit more time to charge.

Here's what it does. It is plugged in, says 63% or some number percentage charge, I inplug it and take it to use it and within 2 minutes it shuts off and says it has no power. So, I plug it in, and it says it has 62% or some slightly lesser percentage charge, and then I unplug it to use it, and it shuts right off again, saying it has no power.

Did you ever fix this?

I will wait till the IPad battery dies then decide to fix or replace. It's my wife's IPad so it's up to her.
