So less than my 500go...

The problem is that Apple uses non-standard drive formats and so the drives must be built specifically for that particular Apple machine.

So you're going to have to wait until some company comes out with a larger one. You can't just buy one off the shelf from Fry's or whatever.

I've been looking for a company that will make a drive for this. The problem is that it is just too new. I can't find any that make it for the previous generation either. I don't know when they might be available.

However, if you're that much in need of extra space, you can try these:

They're essentially SD cards, but they are finished to look very nice on the Retina's and Air's. 128 GB isn't a lot of extra space, but it might tide you over until there's a better option.

You can buy a 750GB or 1TB drive pulled from a working Macbook Pro from Ebay, but it's very expensive.

Sadly Marcus - Apple changed the drive technology to PCIe on the newer MBPr's so you can't use the older M.2 SSD blades.

さんによる

That is a PCIe drive; it says so in the description, and it's from a late 2013 model which is PCIe (as is mine). Also, the old drives were not M.2 - though I wish they were!

さんによる

Well yes both the '13 & '14 models use a PCIe SSD per Apples Specs sheets. But, Apple has custom firmware on the SSD. So far no one has tested swapping around the SSD's between these models so we can't tell you if it will work or if there is any long term issues. The M.2 spec is a physical form factor standard it did not define the I/O signaling. Which makes this more confusing.

I splurged on original purchase and went with the 1 TB SSD for this MBPro Retina Mid 2014. Still getting my files situated from the old system. The TiimeMachine is taking forever to do its backup (I guess the TimeMachine didn't see that the basic system software/apps/etc. was the same. Guess it knows what it doing. Have got my self an external disk I've made a "mirror" of the boot disk using Carbon Copy Cloner. Have a lot to do before I can "play" around and see the differences from my old reliable MBPro 2,3, early 2011; which had been modified a lot and was very spiffy with the 256 GB SSD as the boot drive.

Having the 1 TB SSD in my new MBPro Retina, partitioned as my old system was, has a very good investment. Need to look around to confirm that there not many user internals that can be modified. But then again, maybe I should stay out of my new MBPro for a while. :)

Was this an Apple drive or someone else's?

さんによる

Depending on your HD's I/O it could take some time. Are you using USB and if you are, are you using a USB 3 external drive (HD or thumb drive) . If you can try getting a mirrored Thunderbolt drive, they scream!

さんによる

The 1 TB SSD is Apple's. The TimeMachine backup was being done over my home network. I usually time them for middle of the night so it has the network all to itself. I have yet to try a Thunderbolt, look forward to.

This was straight out of the Apple factory. Who knows what manufacturer. Most likely many MBPros (and others) configured the same may not have the same manufacturer of drives (probably not going to call them that long) or memory, etc.

Regarding theTimeMachine - these are Apple TimeCapsules backing up over my home network. Guess after the initial backup the incremental ones are quick. I thought, when asked by the Time Machine software, if I wanted to inherit the existing backup it would be quicker. Guess not.

Looking forward to trying a Thunderbolt drive. Have to get over the outlay for the MBPro before buying more. ;)

OWC planned to release an SSD upgrade option for MBP '14 in Q2 2015. Let's see what happens.
