How much thermal paste to apply?

I've recently fully stripped a water (coffee) damaged MBP to give it a good clean (including removing the thermal paste).

Now im in the rebuild stage and come stuck regarding the replacement of the thermal paste. Basically, how much do i need to apply on each of the chips?

Because when i removed the logic board, the paste had overflowed in different amounts over the chips on to the green circuit board.

The reason i ask, i remember when my had to replace the thermal paste on my old PS3, too much paste was considered just as bad as too little. Is that the case here?

taff, just to much would be just as bad since it would block the heat transfer. Anyhow, take a look at this great guide. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks oldturkey03 for your quick reply.

I did view the guide that you linked before I posted this question. In hope that it would answer my question. But unfortunetly, it only states to apply the paste with your finger and it doesn't give the amount to apply :(

Yes, I see what you are saying. Since most of us on here use a lot of Arctic Silver thermal paste, I recommend using the instructions posted by them on here. The instructions should also hold true for other manufacturers. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for the new link. After a bit of searching, I managed to find the right page.

I've just had a thought. What if I put a dollop of paste in the centre of each chip, then when I place the logic board back on and secure it, will that not spread the paste to the correct thickness?

Yes it will. A bit of paste the size of a pea should do

Excellent...thanks
