complete teardown for iMac. Need to remove the stand.

One of my users had shelves installed above her desk and they crashed on top of the iMac (almost killing her, but she is OK). Although the machine turns on and functions, the stand is damaged and the screen is permanently tilted. It is supposed to be 90 degrees from the base but now it is at 30 degrees. I need a complete teardown of the machine to get to the stand and fix that. I was able to figure out most of it, but I'm stuck when I get to where the stand is attached. I wish I could attach a photo of where I'm stuck on here, but alas.... I can not.

Anybody know how to disassemble the stand of an iMac?

I uploaded some photos of the stand mechanism. I think one of the nubs (not really sure what to call it) has been forced below the arm that allows the stand to tilt. The nub bent the mechanism completely out of shape and is holding it down.

Here's a vid on how to take the stand off Stand removal (same as the 24" Cinema display). You could replace it with a VESA Mount and you can buy the adapter from Apple VESA Adapter

I did look at that video, unfortunately it is still tilted downwards. I think it is the inside problem. (I posted some photos) I might have to replace the rear casing and stand at this point.

Without stressing the hinge can you bend the stand so it will clear the bottom of the systems edge?

Wow! Now that I see what happened I'm very surprised the screen isn't broken or the system is even working.

The only way I can see you fixing this is to try popping the stud back by prying the metal side plate. Otherwise ,its time for a hacksaw to cut it off so you can get the foot off to allow you to replace the entire assembly, make sure you can get it first!

I think I might have fixed it! I completely took apart the hinge assembly (man that was a pain). When I got that arm off, I saw it was banged all to !@#$. I used a hammer and a vice to bang it as close to the shape as possible. Got it back together today and it seems to be holding. Although it doesn't seem as sturdy as before and I am reluctant to give it back to my user. I think I will still ask for a replacement from the company that installed the shelves. (Drywall screws to hold up 4 6' shelves into a plaster wall and no where near any studs... very dangerous). Thanks for all your help!

you mean the stand somehow got pushed into the body? can you try to lower it?

the stand is locked to the spring-loaded hinge with 8 screws. put the computer face down and try to press down the stand, insert a credit card as far as you can into the slot of the stand while keep pushing the stand down, it should be locked after you hear a click. remove the card and you can access the screws

if the stand wont go low enough or wont click, maybe you have to cut off the stand and replace the hinge

do you know how to replace the hinge? I haven't found a guide for it but I have tried to get the whole mechanism off, but it seems completely stuck.

Replacing the hinge requires removing the stand first, then remove the hinge from the inside. If you can't remove the stand, you will have to try to free the hinge from the inside, or cut the stand off, or replace the entire case. let us see the damaged hinge from inside, we may find a way to take it apart from the inside

I finally attached the photos, let me know if you need more.

How much can the entire stuck module move if you remove the screws holding it to the case? Can you access the screws holding the stand to the hinge?

Google for Tim's laptop service manuals, they have the official imac 27" 2010 model repair manual. Although stuck hinge is not listed in the procedure, full disassembly guide is provided. It still helps
