Any advice on installing Jaguar on iBook G3 Clamshell?

I have a clamshell iBook and I'm trying to install Jaguar on an OS 9 system, it will start the disk but when it restarts in has a gray screen with the apple logo then all the sudden it gets lines through the middle of the screen and stops running the disk, any ideas on how to fix this problem, i bought this one and a tangerine one for Christmas presents for the kids but they will get on the internet but won't bring up a full page or install updates because the system is to old, so i bought the jaguar upgrade because its supposed to be able to be the last upgrade you can put on these old buggers. any help would be appreciated, happy holidays jen

Jaguar seems to have a problem loading on these. I use Panther and have even used tiger by removing the hard drive and installing it using another machine. They use Safari Camino and Firefox just fine. Make sure you have at least 256MB of ram. You might have to boot from your 9.1 disk first and run the firmware update which is on that disk. I have rebuild 5 or 6 of these and they still work well.

If you've got OS 9 running fine on them and you just want to be able to access the internet, try Classilla.

Also, your iBook clamshell supports not only up to Mac OS X v10.2 'Jaguar', but to Mac OS X v10.3 'Panther' which I highly recommend over Jaguar. Not only is it faster on the same hardware than v10.2, it also has better browser support:

  • Camino (up to Camino 1.6.10)
  • iCab (up to iCab 4.7 (most recent version))
  • Firefox (up to Firefox 2.0.0.20 (somewhat outdated))
  • Safari (up to Safari 1.3.2 (extremely outdated))

Some other advantages of Panther over Jaguar that might prove useful for your kids include:

  • ZIP support and 'Secure Empty Trash' built into Finder
  • Fast User Switching (allows a user to remain logged in while another user logs in)
  • Exposé (enables easy window switching)
  • TextEdit now compatible with Microsoft Word (.doc) documents
  • Increased PDF rendering speed in Preview
  • Font Book (a font manager)

To run Mac OS X v10.3, you need:

  • a G3, G4, or G5 processor at least 233 MHz [You meet this requirement]
  • built-in USB [You meet this requirement]
  • at least 128 MB RAM (512 MB recommended) [Your iBook supports a total of 544 MB of RAM]
  • CD-ROM drive [You meet this requirement]

To reiterate what others have already said:

In order to run any version of Mac OS X on your iBook, it needs iBook Firmware Update 4.1.7.

Before jumping into what maybe bad news, Does the system boot into OS9 at all? A lot of these older machines need firmware upgrades to be able to install any version of OSX - I had a similar experience the first time I tried to install 10.2 on an old Bondi Blue. if you can get OS9 running, run the software updates, looking specifically for firmware updates. hopefully those will do the trick.

it has os9 on it, i can get on the internet but when it brings up certain pages such as myspace it won't even bring it up because it has to be an osx version to do any of the upgrades, but it will bring up yahoo but won't let me sign in, i haven't been able to find os9 updates

Not OS9 updates, firmware updates, sadly, even browsers that work in 10.2 are completely obsolete too.

Here's the link to the firmware update - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?...

You could try booting Mac OS X from an external hard drive, to see if the firmware is necessary or not.

Also, if you want Mac OS X, it goes all the way up to Jaguar:

I'm new to this site, but I have a couple small offerings: I installed Tiger on both my clam shells when it first came out, perhaps they are the later models 366 and 466 respectively.

I use them as wireless printer servers primarily since I was able to find and install airport cards. They each have one USB and one FIREWIRE Port. I also have the cable for AV out which I may try since both screens now appear blank (although by looking closely faint shadows can be detected. I access them using screenshare from my newer machines and also putting them into firewire disk mode by pressing the T key when starting up.

I'm in the same shape as Jennifer. Trying to update / run disk repair (in fact) on my blueberry-colored clamshell. I'm going to try hooking it up to an external drive via USB cable, the external drive is hooked up to my Apple iMac via firewire. The DVD is ons the latter. Will let you kow what happens. :-)
