2011 vs 2012 MacBook Pro Bottom Case Same

I recently purchased a new bottom case for my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro. After taking off my current bottom case and comparing it the replacement, I noticed there was some differences in the black foam-like material attached to the bottom.

On the one that came with the machine, there is a cutout and extra layer of foam under the RAM where as the replacement doesn't have this.

My question is: are there two different parts? Does the extra foam matter? If they are different, where would I go about getting a mid-2012 bottom case?

Yes there are different bottoms. Yes the cutouts make a difference (they are for insulation/vibration dampening and fan clearance). If you can not transfer or manufacture a similar material the best would be return the defective part to your vendor for a replacement.

Wish I could post pictures to show how minor the differences are. I'm talking about a 1mm extra piece of foam above the RAM. This is the only difference. Fan cutouts, etc. are the same.

In any case, the above answer isn't that helpful. If there are different bottoms, where can you find a mid-2012 bottom case. I have searched everywhere for this part and it doesn't seem to exist.

In fact, just like everyone else, iFixit sells the same replacement bottom case for the 2011 and 2012 models. Do they have it wrong?

Shoot iFixIt sales an email or give them a call. This is an open forum supported by volunteers. With that said, we don't deal with replacing bottom covers that often.
