Can the hard drive be replaced?

Reviews have said the SP has an msata drive. Has anyone opened up their unit and seen if it is replaceable? It would be really nice to replace the 64gb with a 256gb

Yes, I want to know that too. Crucial has an 256Gb msata that I've seen on Newegg for around $200. that would be a stellar upgrade.

Seems that if it were replaceable it would be the mSATA version which would be 1.8" size. To my eye, the pictures look like similar size/thickness for 64 up through 256 GB version, but I've not seen one in real life. Also, don't know that the mSATA is the correct "drive". It would be nice for someone to let us know. I'd buy the 64GB version of the Surface Pro & upgrade it if I knew.

Apparently it is, but what a pain in the a$$.

Don't worry guys, you won't have to take apart your Surface Pros in order to find out if the SSD is replaceable. We did the hard work and found out that yes, the SSD is replaceable, but opening the Surface Pro is terrible.

Here is a shot of the actual SSD found in the Surface Pro:

Block Image

From the teardown: "The Micron RealSSD C400 packs 64 GB of storage capacity. It can read 500MB/s and write 95 MB/s — all in a tiny 1.8" form factor."

The link above says it is replaceable

Check out the tear down - Step 21

"The SSD is removable — but you risk killing your tablet by trying to open it."

So the answer is yes but it would be extremely difficult.

It would be better to spend the extra money and get the 128 GB version then suppliment that with a 64 GB microSD card

I have replaced the SSD in my 64GB Surface Pro. It has been an adventure and I'm still having trouble with the 256GB SSD. I'm hopping to have Win8 reinstalled sometime today. You can see pictues and follow my findings on the Microsoft forum at tabletpcreview in the thread "Anyone try opening up there pro yet"

FYI, I just replaced mine with a ‎SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe, ‎MZ-V8P1T0B/AM, SSD. I was during a battery replacement, so I had to remove the LCD anyway.

Is there a certain temperature we have to set the heat gun to? When trying to remove the cover?

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 1- 128gb. Here is my issue it is in disk error loop. If I guessed the issue correctly given the error it states \\?\System. I’m guessing one of the previous owners had a error during OS upgrade or install or possibly a power failure in the process. Now of course in the past I’ve always just pulled the SSD or HD and reformatted. The problem is the UEFI as a BIOS is useless and controlling and makes USB boot impossible. Thus the only solution is pull and format then I have the display bear to deal with if that cost 15 bucks I’d just bust it up and put another display on but they run 70 bucks. Pay for a professional heat pad that’s 80 bucks. I tried pro repair shops and their so clueless they don’t even know the there is an SSD card in the unit and they blabber on about the disk as part of the motherboard. Anyone know of a backdoor way into the unit via a cable? My guess is no thus to me it seems the solution is crack up the display and hope I can pull without breaking or some type of back panel surgery or buy a heat pad.
