Re-attach iPhone 4 top antenna?

Hi,

Im working on fixing the screen on my iphone 4 verizon, and in the process i broke the top antenna contact off. If you look at step 25 on this guide you will see what i am talking about. I have a soldering iron (hako fx-888) So if i need to re-solder it i can.

Thanks in advance

The photo on step 25 shows the wifi ribbon cable and not the motherboard, if the ribbon cable is damaged you need to replace it, it cant be soldered, if you are referring to the wifi port on the motherboard where that ribbon cable plugs into that get's tricky, the first thing I would do with this problem is look at the port under magnification and see if it's egg shape and if so I have had good luck with a dental pic tool reaching inside the port and VERY carefully bending the metal round again, as for soldering a new one on, first off all of my parts suppliers don't offer a replacement, If you can find a new port the job is at a professional skill level, It's worth you trying if you are comfortable with it, I have soldered a new wifi port successfully one time with a Harvested port from a bad motherboard and would do it again if I could get the new part, Good luck !

Im talking about the little thing that he has on the pry tool. Its just soldered to the top part of the frame, i think its just a grounding thing, There is absolutely no electrons on it as far as i can tell.

Ok, I have a totally disassembled I4 cdma in front of me Identical to yours, because I have never needed to remove the screw that holds that ribbon cable on so I have investigated to see what it is, it is hooked to the ring of the earphone jack and I would guess it's a grounding cable, I will be contacting one of my instructors to find out more about it tomorrow, If I were you I would reassemble the phone without it, the worst outcome would be your phone jack wouldn't work, and maybe it would, if it doesn't work its not that bad to get to again, please keep me posted.

I was actually successful in re-attaching the cable, about 2h later and a very tired neck it seems to be working, the headphone audio sounds fine!!

In case anyone else comes across this looking for the same information, there is a bit of misinformation posted here.

The top antenna contact is shown in step 26 of the guide referenced by the original poster. It has nothing to do with the headphone jack other than using one of the headphone jack screws as a path to ground.

Verizon requires antenna diversity from any phone connecting to its network. That means the phone must have more than one CDMA antenna. On the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 there are 4 "breaks" in the metal mid-frame. The top portion of the mid-frame is one CDMA antenna (receive only) and the bottom portion of the mid-frame is the other CDMA antenna (transmit and receive). These are the antennas used to connect to the carrier's network. The side of the mid-frame with the volume buttons is not part of the antenna system while the side opposite the volume buttons is part of the antenna system for GPS and WiFi.

The antenna contact the original poster is asking about is the ground for the top CDMA antenna. If this is broken, eventually you will run into reception problems. You may not notice right away, but areas where you had low signal strength before breaking this connection will probably have no signal after breaking it.

There are two options for fixing this. The first is what the original poster did: solder it back on to the top section of the mid-frame. If that is not possible, then you will need to pick up a new mid-frame.

Hope that helps!
