Is the protective film necessary to the function of this iMac? I got one without an HDD/film.
Hi Ethan, I'm so sorry that I didn't see your question until now. It doesn't seem to me that the protective film is highly critical. By now I'm sure your iMac is back up and running. Hope all is well.
Randy
Thank you for creating this. Very helpful!
You're welcome! I'm glad that it is still useful.
Thanks for the guide!
I am putting an ssd with an ide adapter in mine. I am not able to use a standard 2.5 to 3.5 mount because the ide adapter sets off to one side more cause the drives assembly to not fit properly. I think I will forgo the mount and just use double sided foam tape or several strips of velcro to hold the drive in place. It will also need some electrical tape or insulator behind the ide board cause of exposed contacts.
I hope to finish up later today.
Update: Foam tape secured the drive above the DVD drive. I had to lengthen the hard drive power cable about 4"s.
Thanks again!
I'm so glad that the guide was helpful for you, George! Thanks for letting me know.

Oh, and good I provision on the cable!
Ah! Auto correct. Meant to say good improvising.
George, I just noticed your comment. How did your SSD upgrade go?
Ah, never mind! I now see the rest of your comments. I hope you have (had?) the performance improvements that you were hoping for.
You’re welcome, George! I’m sorry that I hadn’t noticed your comment, years ago now. I hope that your SSD mod went well. Post a report if you can!
Auto-corrupt is the worst, but still solid info; thanks.
I have one of these I built up from parts. It ran for years until my Mom who used it passed. I get it back and went to update it from the 10.5 to 10.5.2 (as I recall) and it wouldn't update. It kept freezing half way through. I replaced the all the RAM in it and it finally updated however I had disconnected the display cable and now the display is black. Any guidance on the display cable connection and trouble shooting it?
Hey Marc! I'm sorry, but it's been many years since I've worked on these G4 iMacs. I'm straining my brain to remember the routing of the display cable. I would look at the connector ends, especially at the logic board where the socket can sometimes come loose from the board. I'm speaking generically here of all Macs. If it is a ribbon connector, make sure it is pushed in fully and/or the clamp is snapped down tightly. The delicate connection on the back of the display should be looked at if all else fails. Sometimes the cable itself is just bad, especially with many years of use and heat. Not sure if you can still source a new cable, if that is the cause of your issue.
I'm cheering you on for making this machine go for this many years! Good luck!
