We removed this at 140k to clean the carbon build up from the exhaust gases over time. It keeps the engine running more efficiently. If the EGR system gets clogged, combustion temps will get too hot and will damage engine in the long run. If you get code p0401 egr flow insufficient, its caused by excess carbon, and doing this will help clear the code. If it's clogged excessively, or if its stuck open or stuck closed, then you might have to replace the parts.

Torque specs:
- 10 ft. lbs - Wiper arms
- 6 ft. lbs - Wiper motor mount bolts
- 9 ft. lbs - Cowl sub assembly bolts
- 6 ft. lbs - Air box bolts
- 15 ft. lbs - EGR mounting nuts and bolts
- 7 ft. lbs - EGR E8 torx stuf bolts
- 7 ft. lbs - EGR pipe bolts

My 2013 Toyota Prius is starting to accelerate inefficiently, having to floor the gas pedal and the engine revving as I go uphill, even if the hill isn't very steep. It's been unusually sluggish lately and I think that might be one of the problems. It's getting rather sluggish for even a hybrid. No other symptoms (yet). I drive that car a lot and it blew a head gasket a couple of years back and it had to be replaced and I didn't know why, but I heard that third gen priuses are prone to blowing head gaskets. I looked up "why is my 2013 prius sluggish" and finally found out how that most likely happened. It waited until things got really bad before indicating that something was wrong and the head gasket had to be replaced. I am going to consider checking the egr. Seems complicated so I might have it taken to a mechanic for that, until I figure out my car's anatomy better. As someone with autism and ADHD, I have a few challenges like remembering what screws go where.

My Prius had a smog inspection done weeks ago and it passed. I also heard about other possible issues such as a dirty throttle body or an aging battery. When the hood is opened, dust and debris can be seen on the exterior of engine parts.
