Gather your tools. Drill, Sharpie, Drill Bits, Painters Tape.
-
Get the parts, too. The front license plate bracket and the 4 plastic spreader rivets.
-
Don't forget the Touareg :)
-
Use Painters Tape to mark your drill bits at 1/2" of depth - so you don't drill into the bumper too far.
-
-
-
Position the license plate frame and center it on the VW emblem and parking camera (below, if installed). You can use the vertical supports in the lower grill (hard to see in this pic) to assist in alignment.
-
Hold the license plate frame in place using some painters tape.
-
Using the Sharpie, mark the four holes that you'll be drilling.
-
-
-
-
Tap the center pins of the rivets so they are flush with the rivet body.
-
Use #10 x 1/2" Stainless Steel Screws to affix the plate to the mounting bracket. You can see slight indentations where the screws are to go. I drilled pilot holes first.
-
Don't use the "standard" license plate hardware that is 3/4" long. Those screws appear to be long enough to hit the bumper when inserted.

I would like to know where the license plate bracket/frame was purchased.
Nice instructions! I bought my Touareg from Honda dealer with no front plate holder. They ordered me the holder but it came with no instructions. These were perfect! Thank you!!!
Really, VW. $45,000+ for an ID.4 and *I* have to drill holes in the body to mount the license. This stinks.
This was immensely helpful and the install went seamlessly. THANK YOU JUSTIN!
I had to go buy an 11/32 bit but that was definitely a perfect size for those plastic rivets.
FYI - if anyone is wondering you need to get the part from your VW Dealer, not from some aftermarket/Amazon outfit. Mine was made in Slovakia same as the car and it fit perfectly.
...and yes, my car was from Alberta, Canada and they only use one plate because they are the renegade province of Canada!!
