Screen is getting darker

My old G4 has a screen that seems to be getting rather dim. It's usable (I have given it to my husband for office work), but when I go back to it from my MacBook Pro I'm sure it's getting worse.

I'm thinking it might be the CCFL backlight - does it gradually dim over time?

I know that this is a difficult item to swap out, but I need to be certain this is what it is before I take the thing apart.

Otherwise the screen is fine - just a bit dim and the whites are a bit yellow.

Thanks

Yes it's most likely the backlight... IMO replacing the entire LCD is a much easier DIY task than just the backlight.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

I believe so, but it's also a more expensive option and you could easily spend £120 for which you could virtually get a complete 2nd hand G4. Hence me looking at the backlight only.

I was looking at the 2nd hand LCD's available, but the CCFL would probably be just as dim in those I guess?

With the new LCD option, I was finding it tricky to see what LCD was the exact fit for the G4....any ideas?

You're going to havet to remove the LCD to get at the CFL. On the back of the LCD is a manufacturers part number (several different vendors are possible, even for a single model of laptop). Google Shopping will help you find the LCD, or the CFL for that LCD.

So as I feared - it looks like I have to take it all apart before I can know what I need....husband is going to love me for this!

It can often be the case that you take something apart that was kind of working and then you're unable to sort it and are left with a heap of bits...dilemmas.

That's why we have guides, get the proper tools (here or elsewhere) make pictures or diagrams to keep things straight... I use double sticky tape on a sheet of paper as "screw keepers", with notes or diagrams to ensure I put the pieces back in the correct order.
