Will not recognize replacement hard drive

I went through the hard drive replacement guide step by step. I did everything according to directions. I did not have any parts left over at the end. My iMac will power on, but will not recognize the new hard drive I installed. I ran the Snow Leopard install CD because I wanted to restore from backup to the new hard drive. The install program ran from the DVD optical drive, but it simply cannot see the new internal hard drive. My original 250GB hard drive was made by Western Digital the new 500GB hard drive is a Hitachi Deskstar model. I have not yet attempted to replace the original and see what happens.

When you boot from the installation disk, did you go to Utilities - Disk Utility and format the disk?

I went to Utilities - Restore from Time Machine backup (or something of the kind).

Ok, I feel less than intelligent. Yes, I had to format the drive first. Thanks for the help.

Thank you for this too. I'm glad you had this problem and posted the solution. Didn't know I had to format it before it would see it!
