GL-703GE not Booting after cleaning heat sink and fans

My son has an GL703GE he received as a hand me down from his cousin he's had for about a year working fine. He thought it would be a good idea to open up and blow the dust off the CPU/GPU heatsinks as well as the fans. He did this and then put it back together and had no power at all on battery or plugged in. He said he didn't unplug anything except the secondary hard drive. I took it apart with him again, checked all connections we could find (battery, memory, lcd, wifi etc) and made sure they were all fully connected. We also did a hard reset of the battery (held power button down for a full minute). After we put it all back together we then got a battery charging light (we had nothing there before) and the power button turns red and the keyboard backlight cycles from red to blue and stays blue but the laptop never finishes booting. Nothing on the screen and the fans never come one. I checked it with an external monitor, still nothing. The laptop was built in 2018 and looks to have the original battery and since the battery was not great at holding charge before (it lasted maybe 45 minutes) I'm thinking the battery has just given up, but I'm open to suggestions before we spend the money to replace it...thanks!

I realize that you tried a power reset but try a full power refresh and check if that resolves the problem.

  • Disconnect the charger from the laptop if connected.
  • Open the laptop and disconnect the battery from the motherboard. (You don't have to remove the battery, just disconnect it)
  • Remove the coin cell RTC battery from the motherboard

When the RTC coin cell battery has been removed, measure its voltage. If it is <2.5V DC or if the battery is >4-5 years old, replace it. The battery model number should be on the battery itself, e.g. CR2032 or similar

  • Press and hold the power button on the laptop for a full 30 seconds and then release it.
  • Reinsert the RTC coin cell battery (+ve side up as marked on the battery).
  • Reconnect the battery, reassemble the laptop, connect the charger and check if it turns on OK.

If the laptop turns on OK, there might be a message stating that the date and time are incorrect. This is normal as the BIOS has been reset back to default by the above procedure. Once the date and time have been corrected, the message won't appear the next time the laptop is started. Also if any user definable BIOS settings were changed by you to suit whatever system requirements were needed, they will need to be changed back again as well.

If still no good, was the battery disconnected from the motherboard during the cleaning process? Not quite sure from your question whether it was or wasn't.

If the laptop doesn't indicate the the charger is connected, then because the battery wasn't disconnected from the board, possible board damage has occurred.

There's always power from the battery on a laptop motherboard somewhere, even if the laptop is turned off. The battery needs to be disconnected as soon as before doing anything else.

You may need the schematics for the board to find out what's wrong.

I think the the board is a dabknbmb8d0 (model number on the board itself), I couldn't find a free download online but here's a link where you may get them. (scroll down to post #8) You have to join the website to download.

There are a few others that you have to pay to get them. Search for "dabknbmb8d0 schematics".

If your board is a different model number, search for that but I think that GL703GE boards are mostly the same with only a few minor differences. You may need to find the boardview files to locate the various components on the board as not all are designated.

Thanks for the very detailed suggestion Jayeff! We did the power reset as you mentioned but did not do the full power refresh with the RTC battery so I will try this with my son as soon as we have a chance and report back.

We replaced the RTC battery and and followed the outlined procedure, no luck.

:( I asked my son and he said he did not disconnect the battery when he did the initial cleaning.
