I need to increase the force of my toilet’s flush

Hi, Ive got a toilet that for the moment flushes okay, but i would REALLY like for it to flush with greater force. Its a strong preference since currently i need to use 2+ flushes to totally clean my toilet bowl after use.

Hi @abbasali67700

Have you checked how much water is in the cistern prior to flushing the toilet? Is it filling to the desired level?

The capacity of a cistern can vary due to the country location e.g. in the USA the cistern capacity is ~6 litres, in Australia it can be 9 litres

Older toilets, having a wide "throat" may need more water to fully flush than more modern toilets where the pan has a narrower throat to accommodate the dual flush feature e.g 3 litres for a 1/2 flush and 6 litres for a full flush.

For example, if you have a toilet where the cistern has been replaced with a newer dual flush cistern but not the original toilet pan which may still have a wider throat, then it may be that the full flush is insufficient. You may have to change the toilet pan to suit the newer cistern

Hi @abbasali67700

You could check how much water is being used in a full flush. Take a note of the house water meter reading before the flush and after the cistern has stopped refilling after a flush. Ensure that no other taps are in use at the time.

At least you will know how much water is being used for a single flush .

Once you know then check for the make and model name of the pan (usually toilet pans have some maker's name and/or model information on it somewhere).

If there is search for product information re the pan model and check if it shows either the capacity of the associated cistern or how much water it uses for a flush.

Is it a dual flush type toilet i.e. two flush buttons - 1/2 and full or only the one button?

Not sure what it is like where you are but you can easily see the difference in the size of the throat between a dual flush toilet pan and an older single flush type pan.

You can't increase the flush power per se as it relies on the amount of water stored in the cistern i.e. the more stored water the longer the flush to remove the contents in the pan. The pressure (gravity) comes from the water being released down a pipe connected between the cistern and the pan

If there is a dual flush pan installed or even not and the water stored level is not as per what the product states then you may have to access the cistern and either adjust or replace the cistern valve. Usually it is a valve with a cut-off float mechanism that drops when the water level falls during a flush and rises when the cistern is refilling and cuts off the water at the correct level.

Presumably the flush drains OK i.e. the water doesn't rise in the pan before draining away more slowly? If so this indicates a blockage in the drain somewhere.

Hi @jayeff, that’s helpful.

Unfortunately, I am living in England and the cistern is hidden behind a tiled and boxed-in “panel” since original development (lived in by one other person and then me, so doubt it was modified much since its first development) which isn’t easily accessible so it’s tricky to assess.

Would you have any other advice on how to increase the flush’s power, please?

Kind Regards,

Abbas
