No image after replacing thermal paste

My HP OMEN 15 CE 198 WM was running hot so I decided to clean the fans and reapply thermal paste. I did so using a non-conductive thermal paste (Deep Cool Z5) and put everything back in. Now there's no image, neither on the laptop screen nor on an external monitor. I did forget to remove the internal battery while doing this.

This is what I tried:

  • Cleansed and reapplied the paste on CPU and GPU
  • Removed RAM modules, switched their positions, tried one by one
  • Disconnected the screen ribbon cable and reconnected it
  • Tried a lot of arcane shortcuts such as powering up while pressing Win + B, Win + V, ESC, F2, F10
  • Removed the Wifi card, the SSD and HDD
  • Removed the battery, pressed the power button for 60 seconds
  • Removed the battery, pressed the power button for 60 seconds and let the laptop sit like that for a couple of hours

I tried all of these things at least twice. Nothing worked. This is the behavior I'm seeing:

1- Without SSD/HDD

It turns on (no screen), and does nothing until I turn it off

2- With SSD/HDD

I turn it on, it immediately turns off. Then it turns on by itself for about 6-10 seconds, then off. Finally, it turns on and remains on until I turn it off. When this happens, I can see the HDD led blinking as if there's activity happening at random intervals, much like when Windows is loading. Fans also spin at regular intervals.

I'd like to know if this is officially dead or there's something else I can try. I should mention there's no CMOS battery and the CPU and GPU are embedded, also the CPU doesn't have an integrated GPU. And yes, I know I might have f****d it up because I didn't remove the battery. However, it's also a long shot that this would've unequivocally fried the mobo. So it'd be great to explore all possibilities.

Here's the CPU + GPU after I cleansed the thermal paste. It also shows the part number it's L10770-601 [image|3420967] for some reason it doesn't show the image when posting as a comment

Thanks a lot for your help!

So, in my experience of working for a ewaste recycling company:

It sounds like you've already taken significant steps to troubleshoot your HP OMEN, but the issue might still be solvable. Given the symptoms, it could be a hardware issue, potentially caused by:

  1. Over-tightened screws: If the screws holding the heatsink to the CPU/GPU are too tight, it can cause flexing of the motherboard, which may lead to no display output. Try loosening the screws slightly.
  2. Thermal paste misapplication: Even though you've cleaned and reapplied the paste, excess thermal paste can potentially cause shorts. It's worth double-checking that no paste has leaked onto any other components.
  3. Battery not removed during the process: While it's not guaranteed that the motherboard is fried because of this, it could have caused some issues with components like the power delivery circuitry. If you have access to a multimeter, you could try checking for any obvious electrical issues.
  4. Resetting BIOS: Since there’s no CMOS battery, you might try resetting the BIOS by either shorting the appropriate jumper (check the motherboard manual for specifics) or removing the internal battery and discharging the capacitors again, then reassembling.
  5. Inspecting components for damage: Look closely at the motherboard and surrounding components for any signs of physical damage or burnt areas.
  6. EC Firmware reset: On some HP laptops, holding down the power button for more than 60 seconds can trigger an embedded controller (EC) firmware reset. You've already done this, but it may be worth trying again after removing all power sources.

If none of these work and given the absence of integrated graphics on the CPU, it could indeed be a motherboard issue, but checking the above might provide some relief.

Thank you for your thorough answer! I'll try these solutions, and I do have a multimeter. Could you give me some pointers as to what to look for?

I have the service manual and it doesn't mention any jumpers, so unfortunately the best bet is no battery + power button.

What to Look For:

No voltage on critical power rails or VRMs could indicate an issue with power distribution.

Short circuits on the main power lines could mean a component or circuit is damaged.

Blown fuses could indicate overvoltage or shorting on certain lines.

MOSFET failure could mean power isn't being properly switched to components.

Can you send me a picture of the motherboard? ill send you a manual
